Does he have a definitive instrumental track?

Just wondering if I'm forgetting a painfully obvious instrumental that he is famous for.

I wouldn't say any of his instrumentals are "painfully obvious." If anything, the instrumentals are lesser known.

Which, of course, does not mean they are loved any less by those who know them. Alexa de Paris is probably my favorite, following by God (Instrumental).

Venus de Milo.

But yeah, God (Instrumental) would've been my first pick.

I get a little lost on "God (instrumental)" when all the drums start coming in with the fills. It reminds me of when Susan talked about him doing "Wally", and how beautiful it was, then he started fucking it up with percussion, etc. I kinda feel that way about "God (Instr)". At some point, it's like "okay we get it".

For me, "Alexa De Paris" is just beautiful. It's melodic, it has strings, it actually has an aurally organic aesthetic to it, and it's still a mid-tempo pop song. "Venus De Milo" is still my go-to wedding march song.

I've been listening to Xpectation a lot lately, and quite enjoy it. Nothing definitive, but it's good work. I mean, you could take part 2 of "The Scandalous Sex Suite" and let that ride on its own, really.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The b-side to "Purple Rain." (Which of course has already been mentioned by everyone.)

Alexa de Paris is my favorite because (as I've said many times) it is just so freakin' joyful. You can tell Prince was a very happy man when he recorded that.

As for Xpectation, I wake up every morning to Xhalation - it's my alarm tune. cool

Madhouse 8 is very Princey and cool. His multi instrumental chops are astounding.

Just heard Junk Music for the first time and his drumming is funky. Tight group.

If everyone's talking instrumentals, I have to mention Arboretum, an absolutely beautiful and atmospheric piano led piece that sounds like something Vangelis might come up with.

My mind originally landed on Venus de Milo. God had slipped my mind. I swear I heard Madhouse Six OK a commercial at some point in life. But I think the winner might actually be Batdance. The vocal chops were certainly more instrumental than lyrical. And it went #1, so that qualifies as obvious, painfully or otherwise. ;-)

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll be on a P instrumental binge her soon. I want to revisit NEWS.

Not at all the kind of thing OP is thinking due to it never being released, but the recently leaked outtake Traffic Jam seems very quintessentially Prince to me with its great linn drum and synth groove with blazing guitar soloing on top. Almost feels like it could be his walk on theme tune during that 1982-4 Minneapolis Sound era.

If by "definitive" you mean most famous, I agree with the poster above who said "Father's Song."

Wouldn't the Madhouse projects be considered instrumentals?

Traffic Jam is probably my favorite Prince instrumental. It represents the fullness of the Minneapolis Sound and the climax is exhilirating.

Im just seeing this. I have to seriously agree that this song represents what Prince was all about.

You could mix Cherrelle I Didnt Mean To Turn You On right into it now that I am thinking of it.

I was going off of memory. Didn't realize it has so many vocal parts. I thought it was mostly just movie quotes. But after listening again... I must retract.

A recent track 'Shadows of Umber' which I think he played in Montreux with full horn section. Impressive.
