The pro-shot stuff that could look better. Reckon we'll get clear versions one day? What say you? I've not heard much talk of video, just audio. So thought I'd put it out there.
.
The 1983 benefit show at First Avenue, 4 those of u on Valium (SOTT warm up show) etc. The stuff we've been looking at through a blurry fog all these years.
.
You know they are there, crystal clear. No second or third generation copy. No pressure, rush or anything, just in the next 5-10 years would be fine with me. Preferably this year though!

think so? I thought P's stage lighting in the vintage era was off, too dark. Even the Purple Rain tour video looked like it was shot in a closet.

I agree - I watched the Maple Gardens 1984 last night and it was pretty dark. They aired it on Australian TV on Rage as a tribute so was on HD TV but the lighting was pretty dark and sometimes hard to pick out details. BUT I would still love it given an official release. Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

If the videos are remastered, can the lighting be enhanced?

That 'Maple Gardens' video is actually the broadcast version of Syracuse. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

where was it broadcast?

That would be nice, but to be honest, I would be happy even if they re-released some of the VHS stuff onto DVD and maybe enhance it and add some bonus footage here and there. I would snag one of everything Dance where y'are, just groove y'all.

from what I know about editing, you can manipulate what's recorded but you can only do so much which is why it's best to get it as good as possible during the recording. I mean, the Purple Rain show was fantastic but it doesn't make sense to have so much of it so poorly lit, especially for that caliber of superstar. It wasn't all the numbers but it was enough of them.

The concert footage for the SOTT movie had to be scrapped because it came out too dark. They ended up reshooting it at Paisley Park. Prince liked his concerts dark, but it looked great in person because the human eye can see more into the light than cameras of the time. Now digital video cameras can shoot clear images with low level light. [Edited 6/21/16 0:38am] [Edited 6/21/16 0:39am]

I have just compared them side by side and I think they are different - for instance the audience are different and when he gets into the bath on the Maples one he is on the left side of the bath and the Syracuse he is on the right - and the footage varies........The intro to Maples says "Prince at Maples Leaf Gardens, Dec 2, 1984". The Syracuse one says "March 30th 1985" - so now I am confused......
I have taken screen shots but not sure how to upload photos on here (if someone can help, I will) [Edited 6/21/16 4:40am] Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I mean, stuff like brightness and contrast can be balanced so things look a little bit clearer but we're never going to see an astronomical improvement. We're talking about standard definition footage so there's only so much that can be done to it. HD footage wouldn't fare much better, but at least the higher resolution gives a bit more room to tweak it. Adjusting the light in post too much is just going to lead to crushed colors and grain on the video, which defeats the purpose of remastering it if you ask me. Purple is the color of my heart,

This is also evident within the released segments of Diamonds & Pearls concert footage which shows how dark the stage was lit for the majority of the time. [Edited 7/11/20 21:54pm]

his later shows seemed to have remedied the problem. still, don't get why the biggest superstar of that moment had anything less than competent stage lighting. It wasn't exactly the 50's when there was still so much to improve on. I saw the lovesexy and musicology tours, i don't remember any lighting problems in person. maybe it was intentional.

in those days, i don't think he had much to do with all those decisions, didn't he have three managers plus alan leeds doing alot of that stuff? I still say Prince kept improving as a live musician/singer. Now, of course, I don't, and no one should expect perfection in a live performance but when i first heard the Live revolution concert I was a little unimpressed myself, but what did I know, I was only 16.
