BBC Liquid News confirm that Prince has "pulled out of Glastonbury"

I was just watching Liquid News on BBC Choice and they had news about Glastonbury. They made a link mentioning Purple Rain and it cut to the Little Red Corvette video whilst the voice over said that "Glastonbury had sold out in 20 minutes, despite Prince backing out"

On another topic entirely, The Rainbow Children was released officially in the UK today and I went into Woolworths to see if they had it and for the second time in a year I was greeted with a "Prince who?" response!! mad

Well, it didn't sell out in 20 minutes (though, some retailers report that their allocation was gone in that time!) but it did sell out in just 24 hours!!!

This is incredible as, last year, it sold out in record time and that was 4 weeks!! Previous to that, it always sold out, but usually a couple of weeks in to June at least. There are going to be so many disappointed people.

It makes me wonder whether this is, partly, a huge scalping scam? I mean, I checked ebay a few hours BEFORE they had sold out and there were already over 100 tickets for sale on there - seems people are well aware that there is a lot of money to be made from these tickets.

Still, I'm there!! And seems there may be a few orgers to meet up with too! See you all out there...

When a concert is "Sold Out" it means that the venue's box office, or the main ticket vendor has sold out. It is usually possible to but tickets way after the sold out date from smaller vendors who purchased there tickets from the Main Vendor. For instance I brought my tickets for Bruce Springsteen from Way Ahead weeks after the concert had apparently sold out. It's always the same with Oasis, they sell out in hours, but you can still always get a ticket. I think it's designed to make struggling bands sound popular (although Bruce and Oasis are still popular)
It were proper bo I tell the!! Bo Selecta!

That doesn't appear to be the case here. By 1pm GMT 35,000 tickets had gone. It was reported around 4pm yesterday afternoon that all high-street retailers and ticket agents such as Stargreen had sold-out of their allocations. At that point, the only place you could buy tickets was from Glastonbury Festival's own main ticket vendor, aloud.com. They sold out at 9am this morning.

There is not a single web-site that is now selling tickets and the official web-sites are saying that there are no more tickets available. The advice is to check ebay.

I'm stunned it sold-out this quick. Another suggestion being bandied around at the moent for such a quick take-up of tickets, is that more people are staying at home rather than going abroad this Summer. Who knows, but it is by far the quickest selling Glastonbury ever - and it has been known, of course, for ticket volumes of this size to sell even quicker. Recently, Eminem sold 100,000 tickets in just 4 hours!

Jeeesus!! You know there was a report recently, that said Emily Eavis was really excited about the prosective replacement/alternative for Prince on the Sunday slot? Well, its frikkin Moby??!!!?! Hardly a great substitute for Prince now, is it? (and hardly worth getting excited about regardless!)

And another year goes by when I'll barely glimpse the Pyramid stage! wink

WHAT?!?!?!!!

Moby isn't a proper headliner to close the festival...

uggh, if I see him end a show with "thousand" while he stands on top of his keyboards like the messiah one more time I will vomit...

heehee, well, I guess I know one show I will easily skip!

Yeah, I saw that. How can you back out of something you never actually agreed to in the first place?!! Prince gets negative press even when he sits on his hands!!!

Call me weird but I'm actually quite glad he's not playing Glastonbury, if only for selfish reasons.

If Prince DID play, I'd HAVE to go (there's no way I'd forgive myself if I missed it disbelief ) but standing in 10 inches of mud, queueing 50 minutes for a toilet and staying in a tent is NOT my thing! Plus, I think it would be a talking-point for many people ("Guess who I saw? Prince!") but the majority wouldn't get 'it'. (We all know how he's perceived by the general public).

That said, Bowie (another hero of mine) played a couple of years back and got a rapturous reception. If Prince played, kicked serious butt and got the crowd/critics raving (as he's well capable) that would be fantastic!

So, what the hell, I'm torn.
Ignore me! fishslap

There's no "pulling out" because it's a crock of shit designed to sell tickets.

I hope he pulled out in time, or else there might be little purple Glastonbury babies running around in nine months.

Same ol', same ol' repetitive rubbish from people who haven't been and think they know what its like!! Really, its better you don't go, you wouldn't enjoy it and you wouldn't contribute to the positive atmosphere either. I can think of nothing worse than 10,000 bods who buy tickets just to see their one favourite performer, be it Prince or whoever! People who do this will not enjoy it and it is better that you just go to one of their own gigs - such a diverse celebration of all types of music at this festival will be too much for these types!

Mia - I don't think its a "crock of shit designed to sell tickets" - as I've said before, they have no problems selling tickets, even without releasing the line-up! This year, it sold out in just 24 hours and the only people confirmed are Radiohead and REM - I'm sorry, but there is no way on earth that 120,000 tickets have been sold on the basis of these two bands playing.

Plus, the organisers WERE in serious discussion with Prince, but "logistical" problems are what swung it. That says to me that Prince was interested in playing, he just couldn't do it this time around. I'll put my money on him playing next year. Michael Eavis is a big fan and he usually gets who he wants to play. Certainly, this was no marketing ploy.

Just to add to this...

Come on let's be real here...of all the entertainers out there to add to a bill for a marketing ploy, do you really think Prince would be the one? sure, he's coming off a critically succesful tour, BUT do you think that'd be enough to make him marketable enough to use to "make glastonbury sell-out?"

heh heh heh, whatevs...The other times I went to the festival, my tickets were purchased long before the line-up was confirmed. I was NEVER disappointed.

One of the things I'll miss most about P not playing is the posts that would inevitably follow on the org..."ooh there was dirt!" or "i was an NPGMC member, I shouldn't have to wait in line for the bathroom"

that would've been a freakin riot!

Has Prince ever played as part of a large group of acts? He backed out of We Are The World, I don't recall him at Band-Aid.

I wouldn't be suprised if he backed out because he didn't want to be upstaged by Radiohead. Their new album is about to drop and alot of people are eagerly awaiting it. They would probabbly recieve a more enthusiastic response than Prince. That's not to say Prince is a lesser musician, it's just that Radiohead is more popular these days.

Wasn't the '4 The Tears In Your Eyes' video played at Band Aid??

Only seen it once - matches the mood of the song perfectly. Very simple & moving.
