Lady Cab Driver

Is there a thread? There should be.

The scissor sound makes me think he probably heard music in everything.

I love this song. The drum roll before he starts his little ... Rant.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

The drums on this song destroy my face every time I hear it. One of his most underrated tracks. The sex scene was pure genius. "...now I know."

This one grabbed me the moment I heard it:

This is for the cab you have to drive, for no money at all
This is for why I wasn't born like my brother, handsome and tall
This is for politicians who are bored and believe in war
This yeah, that's for me, that's who that one's for

This is for discrimination and egotists, who think supreme
And this is for whoever taught you how to kiss in designer jeans
That one's for, that one's for, for you have to live
This one's for the rich, not all of 'em, just the greedy
The ones that don't know how to give

This one's for Yosemite Sam and the tourists at Disneyland
And this one, ooh yeah, that's the one
That's for, that's for the creator of man
This is for the sun, the moon, the stars, the tourists at Disneyland

This is for the ocean, the sea, the shore
This is for and that's for you and that's who that one's for
This is for the women, so beautifully complex
This one's for love without sex

This is for the wind that blows no matter how fast or slow
Not knowing where I'm going
This galaxy's better than not having a place to go
And now I know
(I know)

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

That part was meant to be funny....but Jill's ...screaming makes it more real. LOL

I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

Doesn't sound like it's supposed to be funny at all to me. Sounds more like he is exerting all the frustration described in the rest of the song.

according to LyricWikia the words at the end are;

Not knowing where I'm going

is galaxies better than not having a place to go,

now I know,

now I know

It sounds just the same, but the meaning is different.

I love "Lady Cab Driver" it might be my favorite Prince song.

The sex scene is pure genius and the guitar playing after the sex scene is also pure genius.

The whole song is amazing and perfect. I love everything about it.

The first time I heard the sex scene, I thought it was a rape scene, but after listening to it many many times, I can hear her moaning ooh ooh at the beginning of the scene, and she never says "No." or "Stop." at any point, that's how I can tell that it is an angry sex scene. And you are right. It does sounds like he is exerting all the frustration described in the first part of the song and she is getting a more vigorous experience than she is used too. (Angry sex can be some of the hottest sex)

Love love love this song 🙌 I've been verging on obsessed with it recently. I think it's genius. That sex scene... Amazing (and I've never got the rape vibe that some have mentioned. I've even tried to hear what they're hearing but to me it's just not there AT ALL)

Love the Oberheim "horns" and the solo breaks. My favourite track on the second half of an amazing album.

Everything on that song is perfect. The "mouth gurgle" effect after that killer guitar solo is brilliant.

Lady Cab Driver is definitely one of my favorite Prince songs. Very funky track. DMSR is another favorite. The whole 1999 album is hot.

If I'm thinking of the same sound you are, the scissor sound is supposed to be bed springs squeakingsince he's boning, not scissors.

Perfect Prince genius of a song...has a lot of his themes...lonliness, alienation, intimacy/female bonding as an escape from this cold, violent world.

1999, the album, has so many layers.

And to think he was 23-24 when he performed, composed, arranged and wrote this brilliant album.

Here's what's interesting to me, hadn't listened to this song in years, but my sound guy played it through the house speakers right before my gig. Hmm, may have to add it to my set. lol

Lol well being a lesbian, when I think boning I think scissors so... See how vibrant his... ugh... Brush strokes are? He speaks to us all.

Also why does it have to be angry sex? Sounds like relief sex to me. Like, man this life sucks for all these reasons, but this lion in my pocket just wants to roar.

I also have noticed a lot of Prince lyrics I thought we true are wrong so it's been cool to hear stuff and look up the lyrics again.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I just thought it was a mash up of the characters at 6 Flags and Disney. Yosemite Sam on the Warners tip to boot.

It's a great line. Perfect poetry.

Since this thread I listened to a few versions I have of Lady Cab Driver. My conclusion was that this is one of his few songs that I liked the studio version better than the live versions.

I worked at 6 flags in HS and loved the Yosemite Sam line. It is still one of my favorite lines

I like all his live stuff but I don't think I would ever say I liked it more than a studio track. I love that he changed stuff up live but something about picturing him in the studio creating this stuff. It's like, "how the fuck do you do that?" So very sorcerer like. i mess around with drums and guitars but I really don't know much about making music so for me he's just magic. I've seen him live (after '97) but nothing really does it for me with him more than a pair of great headphones, loud and all up in my ear. 1999 is phenomenal for this and LCD will always be one of those "holy sh!t" this dude is mad genius. I'm glad you all agree. How could you not!?

I miss him real bad today.

I shall respectfully disagree. For many of my favorite songs I enjoy the Live version better than the studio version.

But yes 1999 and LCD are great.

Sorry today was not a good day. cry
