I have such respect for vegetarians , i wish I could but I love beef fish and chicken to much, but prince did get me to at least think about eating healthier
I try to cut out pork as much as I can and to fill my body with as much good stuff as I can ( ill never forget what he said about hot dogs!) now here's a question prince look a little thicker during the purple rain tour area was he one then?

It's well-documented that somehow (thru his grandma? Which one?) he grew up with a lot of Seventh-Day Adventist teaching, and they encourage vegetarianism and are predominantly vegetarian (there had been discussion on the org about this with some saying they know SDAs who eat meat, but that's probably because they don't practice "shunning" and would not "banish" people for not adhering to vegetarianism, so there are meat-eating SDAs too). There was a Natl Geo article about SDAs for having unusually long lifespans, partly attributable to their diet.
There's no proof, but Sign of the Times and Purple Rain seem to be connected to SDA stuff - that's the name of their monthly magazine and proselytizing materials, focused a lot on the end of days.
So, perhaps he was familiar with a meatless diet from his upbringing/SDA influence as a child. They talk about healthful lifestyle a lot in that church.

my intro to vegan ideas was Joint 2 Joint. i decided to go vegan years later, when it was right for me, and it has been right for me ever since.

Thanks artist76, this is very interesting stuff, which could explain the background to his vegetarianism and dietary awareness. And that would also link up with the religious influence in his songs. From this and what other people had mentioned, it sounds like he was gradually shifting towards a more noticeable spiritual chapter from around the Sign O The Times era, which could possibly explain his going over certain things in his life and starting to make some changes to integrate his beliefs.
