Thanks for stopping by.

**

That insight about him spending all his time in the studio partially to simply pass the time, because he was too famous to have any semblance of life outside the walls of PP... I know this is true of many famous people, but it still struck me as very sad. That isolation (which he coveted, apparently, as much as it was foisted upon him) was so damning to him, in so many ways.

Ian Boxill here. As requested by one of your board mates i will answer a few questions.

As far as the tapes destroyed, These were songs that were recorded prior to 2001 I believe, so they are songs prior to me working with him. I was told this by some of the guys that were working at Paisley at the time. I am not sure which masters were destroyed but I believe some were released songs like Sexy MF and other songs that were explicit and had cursing on them. Hope that helps.

Having been in the vault with him on many occasions there are still a lot of tapes in there that seemed to be unreleased music. He would always have me look for songs there and it would take me a while to go through all the tapes because it’s in no particular order. Whatever is still in the vault will be released eventually I am 100% sure.

Nice of U 2 answer. Thanks. Wow the masters to Sexy MF destroyed eek

Whatever was in his possesion was destroyed, I assume that would have been the multitrack. Hopefully the master 2 track is in the hands of WB still.

Still very sad to hear that he destroyed some of his work. Thank U for sharing with us. Any other fan stories or just intersting stories about him?

One other time, this one fan was camping out for weeks and hunting wild animals for food in the forested area behind Paisley Park! I think she was using a bow and arrow to hunt, no lie. Absolute madness. Always seemed like his crazier fans were women too.

I just can't. This had me rolling evey time I would read it. I'm in tears. The lengths some would go to. No wonder Prince talked about fans vs fanatics. He knew some first hand.

Obvioulsy some fans had some mental health issues. You are never quite sure when someone could turn violent. I am so glad i didn't have to do security for him!!

Thank you Ian for speaking with us!

At least with the released songs, WB could have backups. For any songs that were never submitted to the record companies, I imagine those would be gone forever. Such a shame.

I read at one time that the vault had been subject to water damage over the years. This in turn damaged items stored within. Any truth to this? Thank you.

Great read! The bit about the hunting fan is priceless! I remember the veiled lady. I never spoke to her, but she certainly stuck out.

I think a lot of us feared that Prince might destroy recordings he deemed inappropriate, and I guess this is a confirmation. I wonder if it's part of why remasters never came. sad

I would assume that WB has safety copies of at least released material.

Justin Stanley (Studio engineer, drummer, producer and husband of alternative soul singer Nikka Costa.): “Xtraloveable” was an old school, classic Prince track that dated back to the ‘80s. Prince would sometimes pull tapes out of the Vault (The Purple One’s mythical heavily secured library rumored to contain thousands of unreleased songs, videos and concert footage). He would bring them in and put them in the tape machine. Until the end, Prince was still using analog tape. He would only go to Pro Tools at the end of a session. He used the tapes to get him inspired. He was always reinventing and taking inspiration from those tapes in the Vault.

"Prince had the most bizarre fans. One used to show up at functions dressed from head to toe in a white garment. I can’t even call it a dress. She would have a veil on and I believed she changed her name to Princess Rodgers Nelson. Madness! "

Ha ha, we were talking to her at the 2001 Celebration at Paisley Park. Sghe said she came from a commune in Hawaii where everyone was free and could be nude.

She would do ballet twirls during his perfomrances, and I remember she sort of danced a collapse to the floor when he sang his last set at either the finale for "Purple Rain" or " Anna Stesia"
