Source of the studio leaks? For a guy that was so protective of his music--and had a locked vault that only he had the combination for--it seems like A LOT of music from ALL periods was leaked.
Is there any indication to the source of the leaks?
Why--for all his efforts--was he never able to get handle on this? It seems like a strange irony. |

That's not true - virtually nothing leaked after 96 or so. |

Prince would often give tapes of songs to employees, etc. One dude, T, worked in the NPG store, and ended up getting a lot of stuff over his time working for Prince, and shared a lot. Prince wasn't that tight with his music. Those tapes and CDs were passed out like hot cakes sometimes. Prince had to know people were going to share them or whatever, then he griped about it once the internet hit. I think the enormity of how much of his stuff was really out there, world wide, hit him more once the internet came into play, and he could see his stuff sitting on Limewire, or Napster, etc. That's when he got all indignant about.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Wow--interesting all around. It's amazing how technology changed everything. And how many people were prediciting that shift in music distribution? We all grew up with physical stuff--records, 8-tracks, tapes, CDs. Thanks for all the helpful answers! |

If he ever still hangs around this place, I wish he'd show himself and say hello sometime! He's a good guy and I remember chatting with him in the chatroom on the NPGMC. He had/has some GREAT stories! Hi, T, if you're out there! |

RE: the thread topic -- I was just thinking about this today as I was perusing and enjoying some fantastic music that's appeared online in recent days. Stuff I'd never even heard of, even as a longtime (we're talking 30 years at least) fan, which amazes me, and stuff I've heard of but never been able to hear before now.

At the same time I'm loving the great music it's sure making the empty spot Prince left grow even larger. |

I remember him on alt.music.prince, and how him and Liberation used to go back n' forth about boots. Lib wanted so bad to be part of something, but T was already in.

Some article I read recently, I think it was one of the guys that did art work for him, said that Price was often careless and left stuff lying around often, and then would be upset when something leaked.
It was the same guy who posted on facebook his copy of an early config of Emancipation that Pricne gave him one day. Eventually became the boot "Emancipation The Secret Chapter" |

That was the fantastic Steve Parke. He worked for Prince starting with the "Glam Slam" video (he painted the stage, etc), and worked for roughly a decade before Sam Jennings took over as art director around the Love 4 One Another time, also for almost a decade.

I also remember him on AMP, and Lib too. Some of the discussions on amp were classic (and very hilarious). |
