It definately is a masterpiece. Prince showing his artistic skill on the piano, after mostly proving it on the guitar prior.

Glad to see that you are an appreciator of this "masterpiece". biggrin

Yes. Beautiful song. The whole album is a masterpiece. I had never heard of it and I was blown away when i first listened to it.

I wish I could listen to this afresh again... Mind-blowing it was for me at the time, though it still is but in a different way. When did you first discover it?

This song shows his nerve. I was hoping he would play the long intro at the piano and mic show, it's probably the best example of his piano ability so would have been the perfect opportunity. His vocals are off the hook. cloud9 I love how he gives space after the song, almost like a long exhale before Raspberry Beret.

nod yes everything in the song seem to have been designed to perfectly fit into the album. A real work of art.

My jam right here smile. It's my favorite song by Prince by a large margin, so yes, I do think it's a masterpiece. I often get eye rolls from Prince fans when I mention it as a favorite, as if your Prince fave has to be an accessible single or something. Dun get it, but this song hits the heart. Hard.

I've never seen it live in person, but I have the Dortmund '88 dvd and he plays a snippet of it.

I also like Around the World in a Day better than Purple Rain. Blasphemy, right? Purple Rain is probably my third or fourth favorite Prince album. In fact, it's four. 1999 --> Around the World in a Day --> SOTT --> Purple Rain. Parade might knock PR down a spot, too. Apologies for the aside!

Yeah. Alongside 'The Beautiful Ones' and 'Adore', it's really right up there. It's outstanding.

It certainly does. As for the eye rolls, everyone's entitled to their own preference but I do think this one has something powerful and unique that no other Prince song has.

I had this friend and colleague who didn't like Prince one bit, he decided to leave to work as a freelance writer/teacher/impressario.

Years later, he sent me an email to say they'd play one Prince song at one the shows he put together and it was Condition of the heart.

I didn't initially like the long intro but now -- it just makes the song stand apart among his ballads.

Of all his ballads past and present, this one is the most overlooked due to the reasons you all mentioned. The arrangement and lyrics paint a beautiful picture and the vocals are spot on! It DOES (IMO) hit the heart in a way for me in the same way his spiritual/political songs (God, The Love We Make, etc) do, giving it a hard to define quality.

It's literally my favorite Prince song. One of those alone-in-the-studio boutique jams. The vocal performance, the creepy synths, the beautiful piano. Just gorgeous, totally original, mind blowing.

i always make my wife laugh when i try to sing this song, and i get to the part where he sings:

"....how was i to know that she would wear the same cologne as you and giggle the same giggle that you do...whenever i would act a fool, a fool with a condition of the heart....."

trying to impersonate that quirky vocal yodeling delivery he uses when he says giggle ... im always thinking i nailed it, but apparently, im fucking it up...i'll never stop doing it though...what a great song..

I have just listened to this song again and even though I have been playing it regularly for the past 30 years, it still blows my mind everytime. In my opinion, everything about this song is perfect and shows Prince's meticulousness and awe-inspiring talent at its best... From the fascinating beauty of the melancholic music to the universal aspect of the lyrics about disillusionment, as well as the poetry... well, what more can I say?

So, in your option, should Condition of the Heart be considered a masterpiece... or not, and why?

Absolutely!!!! I think Free is also a masterpiece.

Appreciator? lol I'm in LOVE with that song. ATWIAD has always been my #1 favorite album. I still have my album/lp from 1985 and the Bsides.
Such a vulnerable song. A template of an early version of UTCM.

It moves so fast, waves of sound and expression.

My #1 favorite is ATWIAD. Purple Rain and ATWIAD are so tied together, I can't appreciate 1 without the other.

We've had hint of Prince's skill and brilliance on piano over the years coming up to that point, but when he did Condition of the Heart it proved he was a piano maestro

I always love to mix God(the Dance Electric) behind or before Condition of the Heart

It's always been a masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. shrug

I mean...start with that looooong, Debussy-esque piano intro. Who friggin' does that?! It's absolute genius how he sequenced it on the album, too. Quiet brilliance sandwiched between the bouncy, poppy Paisley Park and Raspberry Beret.

I love, love, love this track.

The intro always makes me feel like I'm watching a rainstorm swell to a thunderous, electric cataclysm, before the clouds finally break: crystal notes sounding like drops falling from trees and plants in the storm's aftermath.

Then that brief guitar run takes flight into the clearing sky. When the melody comes in it's always as heartbreaking as the first time I heard it.

And all that's before he even begins to sing...

I also believe it is a masterpiece. Musically, lyrically, and emotionally, an original tour de force! It really showed his vulnerable side as much as anything. When I first heard it, it made me love Prince and not just his music.

I took me years to catch up with this song. When it first came out in '85, I would fast forward (cassette) through it. Nowadays I do like it a lot. I still don't personally think it's quite a masterpiece, but so many people do, so I acquiesce! lol
