Now here's a tricky one:

Showgirls

When the character is in room 319 is it the filmmaker making a nod to Prince, or did Prince name the song after the movie?

I love the way Michael Wincott just says 'Prince' followed by the comedy of everything crazy he represents. Superb!

I hope he saw it!

He may have. It was one of a few recent films featuring Alec Baldwin at the point Prince may have discovered be was Kim Basinger's new BF in 1990. If he cared about such things.

These movies don't reference Prince directly, but rather indirectly via prominently noticeable albums and tshirts:

.

The Breakfast Club (Ally Sheedy's character holding the 1999 album)

Maid To Order (again Ally Sheedy, who wears a Purple Rain tshirt)

.

.

Also quite a few Mystery Science Theater 3000 movies reference Prince when Mike, Joel or the bots are riffing a film. The references are not derrogatory (none that I recall anyway), but for example, song title references, references about purple, or song lyrics, etc., which is cool and not surprising since MST3K was made in MN and everybody involved in it was from MN (or WI).

Good question. It'd make more sense that the director changed the room number, and that Prince had just written a song for them (or a random song in general), and gave it to the movie to use, then the director took a nod from that. I mean, room 319 wasn't exactly a hot spot of nude photography and pubic hair play.

.

However - I'd be interested to know which way it went.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah, Ally was a big Prince fan. She wore that Purple Rain shirt for a good long sequence in the Maid To Order movie.

.

I always thought she would be great to play Wendy in a biopic.

Surely there's a Prince reference in a Jay & Silent Bob movie, other than The Time playing in one of them.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

"Soul Man".........I read in E! magazine years ago that he saw the upcoming trailer to "Showgirls". He liked it so much he ran back to the booth and made them replay it 4 or 5 times in a row.

That was a funny scene, too, going through Prince's albums on what to keep-- Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times-- and to toss the Batman soundtrack to the zombies. lol
