Did Prince cry real tears in the movie Purple Rain?

This question might have been asked before, but I can't find it.

So, I have just got done watching Purple Rain for like the hundredth time lol. And this question came to mind haha. lol

I also ask this question because I have never seen him cry on stage either. I mean I've seen videos of many other performers cry (get emotional during a song), but never Prince (or at least see real emotion. I've seen him act).

Has any one else seen him get emotional on stage? If so, share your stories. smile

The only time I saw him cry on stage was after he replaced Michael Bland with Kirky J on drums.

Man, he sure loved those Gameboyz.

I read in an interview that he said the last time he cried was when he was 13 and his father threw him out and wouldn't let him come home. 13, and people still wonder why he really kept to himself and people at arms length.

admission is easy, just say U believe, then come 2 this place in your heart.

He emoted a lot. That's for sure. As far as Purple Rain, it's acting. It's not too hard to conjure tears up for a scene.

One of the most emotional times I've seen him on stage was at the infamous Yokohama show on the Hit n Run Tour, the last ever show for The Revolution. "Purple Rain" was very emotional, and he went through two cloud guitars, although I think one of them was fucking up with sound. He threw it on the ground, and someone handed him another. You could tell he was in the throws of emotion, so the guitar got the brunt of that.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

He cried toward the end of 'Forever In My Life' in the movie 'Sign O The Times'

I don't believe that for a second. I'm betting he cried, he seemed in touch with his emotions - choosing not to share or admit that is what it is, but in all those years he had to have cried over something. Grieving his child?? 2 failed marriages??? His parents passing??? I just don't buy that he was steely through all that. But we can only speculate, that was for him to know...

heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Best version of that song anywhere. (Though to be fair though, I think he was singing "It" at that point.)

I agree with you. He had to have cried over something else in his life. And the reasons you pointed out, makes me still wonder how he could get up on stage during those times and not cry from emotion. He must have really been good at holding the tears back. But again he was really in touch with this emotions& Mayte even said he was really sensitive too. So Idk, maybe there is a performance we haven't seen yet.

I agree, the loss of his child would have had him weeping buckets for sure..........

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

.

If we're to believe the lyrics to 'Holy River' he cried when Mayte accepted his marriage proposal:

.

'The Holy River'

I called my girl and told her I had something to give her

I asked her to marry me and she said yes, I cried

Oh, that night I drowned in her tears and mine

I can believe it I lost my mother and best friend and still have not cried in over 30 years my nickname with some is Spock...so he very well may have been honest about not crying. I have not see my father ever cry. I am 53. He is 75

I watched a recording of that show but I could barely see the Cloud guitar, let alone two of them.

Do you remember if both of them were white? I´m asking because I´ve seen clips of him playing the white Cloud during the Parade tour, and I´ve also seen him play a black Cloud with a wooden colored neck during the same tour.

I've definitely seen the black one on the Parade/HitnRun tour. But yeah, they were both white. In the solo part, he is struggling with the guitar not sounding right. He takes it off and throws it (not drops it) in front of him. He turns around, and a roadie is already there with another to give him, and he continues on. Eventually he takes that one off too before finishing up the song. If you find the video, start at the 1h46 minute mark. It happens seconds after that.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
