Very glad about this. I went to the block party he threw the evening Prince died and it was extremely cathartic for me (and several thousand other folks.) Spike Lee and TheCurrent.org basically saved my ass those first few days.

Something irks me about how Spike Lee seems to have inserted himself as some kind of official historian for MJ/Prince in death.

Why? Spikes history of off the wall was amazing and while I never made it to any of the bkloves mj Paris they looked like they were a great time. If he didn't do these things We'd all be complaining that no one remembered them...I hope should is able to give some of prices records the same treatment

He posted some pics somewhere of some Prince stuff he had. He has the golden symbol guitar. He said Prince told him, "You can have my guitar, but I'm not autographing it for you". Lee said, "Hey, cool." He has a few other cool nuggets of stuff.

.

One thing I didn't know was that the film company cut off Spike's funding for Malcolm X, and he had no money for post production. So he called Oprah, Prince, and others, and asked for money. He joked that once the first person said "Sure", and gave him money, he asked the next person for a little more, and so on. He got the money he needed to finish the movie. Prince didn't want anyone to know he'd helped Lee out with the movie. No mention was to be made. I don't know if Oprah said the same thing, but I never heard of anyone else lending money to get the film done - until he told that story in a Billboard conference about Prince recently.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Spike and Prince were VERY cool with one another....

And its not about being an historian.....Mike's and Prince's music belonged to us all...Basically, just consider Spike a SUPER FAN who also happened to be cool (and worked) with both of them....

Hell, I want Spike to do a documentary on one of P's album periods like he did with MJ....I got no beef at all....

I would love to see Spike direct a docu on the "1999" album or the "P.R." film/soundtrack.

Finally. Thank you very much for passing along this info. I am not sure I'm going to attend, but I've been waiting for more info to finalize my decision.

I can't believe nobody has posted anything about this tribute, which was a week ago today. It was an amazing time! Thank you to Spike Lee for organizing this event. It was healing to be around so many other people who love Prince. The music was outstanding! We heard the hits but the DJ played some deep cuts as well as associated artists. So much dancing, so much happiness and, of course, some sadness. There were times that I just wanted to hug some of the people there. Folks from all walks of life, most wearing purple and many in costume, with symbol tattoos, etc.

Some celebs showed up including Rosy Perez, NY Knicks legend Earl the Pearl, Busta Rhymes, former NBA player John Salley, Rev Al Sharpton who led everyone in prayer, remembering the great Muhammad Ali as well. Spike Lee was ever present, opening the ceremony while holding a symbol guitar over his head while leading a local high school marching band who played the sign o the times intro from the movie.

Finally, last but not least, Mr. Andre Cymone made an appearance. He talked briefly about his grief, growing up w Prince and thanked us all for coming!

It was a hot day in BK that day! But that didn't stop anyone from dancing and paying tribute!

Also thanks to DJ Sway for MCIng. He was engaging and classy throughput.
