Over the years, this has become my absolute favorite track off "1999". The synths, the suggestive nature, the Linn drum, the scrambled electronic voice... it's amazing.

I don't like automatic, never have, I have the same problem with three other tracks on 1999. There's something about them that I just don't get. The rest of the album is absolutely stellar but I really don't get on with Automatic, Lady Cab Driver, Something In The Water (althugh I absolutely love every live version I've ever heard) and All The Critics Love U.

. eek OMG, you just named some of my all times faves! You must be a post-WB fan. He was very different then.

Just because I don't like 4 songs? And are you suggesting that there is some kind of before and after thing where you can't be a fan of both?! Did you ignore the bit where I said the rest of the album is absolutely stellar?

Must be a joke. It is impossible to list THOSE 3 as your least favorite. They would all battle for spots in my top 20...lol

Am I only allowed to like what you like? lol

Prince's catalogue is so diverse, it's impossible to love every song, that's actually the beauty of it. Here's another one for you all...

I can't stand Housequake either.

Wow. Lol. A true Princefan contrarian.

What are your Prince faves? It seems you prefer more of his pop structured masterpieces?

I've mentioned nothing about my preferences, just a handful of tracks I don't like. Those are the only tracks I don't like on their respective albums.

1999 has always been my favorite Prince album...and Housequake is probably my least favorite song on SOTT. I don't hate it, but it gets filed under Will Listen to Later. Maybe. There are just so many other GREAT Prince songs to listen to...Housequake always sounded like something he wrote in five minutes while taking a vegan dump. Wtf, I can't believe I just said that. Fuck it, it stays razz. I love some of the lines innit, though.

Always loved 1999, whenever I listen again, it brings back the magic of the very first listens back then, I can't describe it precisely but this album has got a particular atmostphere, and a very addictive sound. I guess it is probably one of my favourite albums too. A-U-T-O-MATIC, All the Critics, Ladycab Driver, Something in the Water (aah those screams!), Little Red Corvette, I can't even think of any songs I dislike on this album.

You think 'Free' is better? I'm annoyed that replaced 'Moonbeam Levels'. Each to their own though.

Ha, thanks for posting the stills from the Automatic music video. I recently saw this video again it has been years. And I thought the bed scene was hilarious. In a good way! But I just wanted to post I agree with the starter post, I LOVE this song I have loved it since 1982 and I was too young to get music. This song has something - the synthesizer on it is simple conpared to other arrangements on his later songs, but its powerful and funky. I love it!!!

You can't help me, I've tried many times but find the tracks are sooo boring. It must be something in the production because one of my favourite live tracks is the birthday show performance of Something In The Water.

What I love about 1999 is the relatively commercial side one, then sides 2-4 just go off into a sexual dance groove. Great album.

First question that should be asked here is, how old you are?
For some, these songs might sound outdated which is understandable.
But if you're 45 plus and don't appreciate this song or album then..... eek neutral

LOVE Automatic. One of my top 5s.
And if you listen closely, you can hear lots of Automatic in Computer Blue the "hallway" version. Which to me is..... jerkoff material.

Two amazing songs.

I actually did find it, and was kinda disappointed by it. Not enough dancing for me.

If Darling Nikki was the coldest song ever written (Prince's own words), then this one comes a close second. It sounds like ice bergs clashing onto each other!

Very good observation.I find the first record (Sides 1 and 2) to be the "fun",party record. But then Side 3 gets darker and moody, which continues into Side 4.
