Create a STUDIO album of officially released PRINCE songs COVERED by other artists..

I thought it would be FUN, to revist the covers by other artists. For those in my life that think I'm crazy for playing Prince all the time, I figured I'd start playing OTHER artists, BUT keep the tunes from Prince! (they'll never know....ha!)

I love studio covers of official Prince songs that are officially on his albums, not songs he's written for others, but HIS songs on HIS albums, so now I'm going to create a playlist of some of the great covers. I enjoy Gary Newman, and Tom Jones, and Mariah Carey...so on and so on..

What are YOUR favorite studio cover songs of studio Prince songs from official Prince albums? That way the list can't go off course and list Manic Monday by the Bangles (but.. great song!) I'm only looking for official Prince studio tracks... covered by other artists, in a studio. (so live perfomances are out..)

Great idea tom jones....I just love that one....all of a sudden my mom likes it lol, hum wonder why.i show them the cover than link the original....lots of purple rain I enjoyed the ballad of Dorothy Parker that was played at the bets....

Ginuwine -When Doves Cry (never knew he covered this! excellent cover!)

TLC- If I Was Your Girlfriend (I had their CrazySexyCool album when it first came out)

Meli'sa Morgan- Do Me Baby ( love her vocals on this cover)

Denice Brooks - Purple Rain (my gosh her vocals and that saxaphone solo just blow me away)

One that would not be on the list is Maroon 5's cover of Kiss. It's awful.

I can appreciate how you like this cover...and Ani diFranco is talented...

But to me, it just doesn't sound right confused

In fairness though - I even find Prince's live versions...yes...even PR, Parade & Nude tour versions never do the song justice

It is the 12" original that is where this song belongs cool

I did not know, until I made this thread, that there was a limp bizkit cover of "1999", although it was performed live at an MTV new years eve event. I was intrigued to find more different things to listen to.

Some are bad, some are ok, and a few are excellent (only my opinion here...sorry)

I have really enjoyed Alicia Keys, and Berlin so far. Do you have any favorite studio covers?

I love Ani and there is another video on YouTube of her covering When you were mine and that was group at too. I love the story of Ani jamming at PP and they went 4 hours until P called it quits cause he was exhausted! He said he felt like she was so free like that because she'd never had a ceiling... Interesting

I did come on here to say that I love Cyndi Lauper's version of When you were mine. I was obsessed with her as well as a kid but had no clue he had recorded it originally! I was so thrilled to hear the original!!

Have you checked out the old "Party O the Times" compilation...from years ago?

It has covers from artists...quite wide ranging if I recall
