Prince's blackness is a huge part of him, and a really interesting topic. It clearly hugely informed his music and i'd be happy to talk about it and listen to someone with some ideas talk about it, but Funkyness's threads on it are barely legible.

So what would Black people, such as myself, call "darkskinned"?
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I don't think Prince cared what anyone thought about who he dated when he was living, and it doesn't matter now. He dated a rainbow of women. He didn't have to prove his blackness by going with the status quo. He was about love, and lots of it

I knew once the shock of his death wore off and his birthday celenrations were over that the stupid stuff would start rolling in. I was right !

He was a Black man who could be mistaken for different racial identities. Happens to many light-skinned Blacks. Nothing new. [Edited 6/9/16 9:05am]

Uhm.. I fail to see the relevance of this, plus you really don't want to get into Prince seniority with me.. LOL but it wasn't intended to be a discussion, merely an observation, so I'll leave the thread to get back to Prince's dark-skinned ladies.

For real.
Newsflash: A black man can have wildly varied tastes in women, just like every other human being on this earth looking for someone. I'm a black man, through and through, and I've dated pretty much every ehtnicity/color out there. But in the end, I married a black woman. But at the end of the day, who cares? And why can't black women just be black women? Why describe them as mulatto, dark-skinned, light-skinned, etc.? Is someone going to start using the paper bag test here soon?

This is garbage, and a topic from only a month or so ago. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

There are some things he's said, but unless the OP get's some direct quotes from Prince saying anything we will never really know. He put Spike in his place on the question, be we don't have the response in video or in print...

I wasn't aware he ever denied his blackness. He once said his mother was italian/black and maybe his dad too and who knows, they may have had italian lineage at some point. We don't know. The first time I ever saw him on AB I knew he was black. It doesn't matter how black he looked, how his girlfriends looked, how he wore his hair. That is an issue with others, I don't think any of it was EVER an issue to him. Thank goodness too, he had enough to do without having to worry about what everyone else was thinking about him.

Thank you for this answer. I don't understand people sometimes. I came to this site today because I was missing Prince and thought that there'd be some comfort here. Instead I find the original ignorant statement in this thread. The person that started this is sitting back and enjoying people trying to defend a pointless (non) question. I don't care whom he dated or married. He NEVER said anything bad about anyone anfdd certainly not "Dark Skinned Black Women" It woud almost be funny if it werent so ignorant. I do know this, Prince was unappologetically Black and that is becoming more and more apparent as the stories of his upbringing and charities and political stances come to light. Unfortunately that makes some people uncomfortable. My suggestion to those is to step away. Let the rest of usenjoy his contributions to the world and let his soul Rest In Peace.

Ohh, they would've made a cute couple.
To be honest, I used to think Prince wasn't attracted to black women. It wasn't until recently I learned that I was wrong. I really want to know what Prince said in his letter to Spike Lee. Spike said P put him in his place. [Edited 6/9/16 9:28am]

Oh I didn't say he actually denied it, just saying it seems to have been many fans who have been pretty much trying to de-Black Prince for years, even some fans who trued to convince others, by trying to change his racial identity to fit their personal views of his racial identity. There has always been loads of threads here about his race, which usually end up deleted or closed anyway. His sister, Tyka, during an interview a few years back, certainly described Prince and their parents as Black. I do believe she should know. Lol. Both Prince's parents were Black. That 'Italian Mother' story has been debunked. Black Americans are many shades, so it is not surprising the siblings in many Black families will becshades 2 or 3 shades lighter or darker than one another. My niece is Prince's complexion and often gets mistaken for bi-racial, which she is not. We don't really have to go into America's history to figure out why so many varied complexions among the Black community though.

FUNKYNESS said: I am still entertained at the violent backlash on this site when anyone even insinuates that Prince was black. I don't understand why you think that- please refer me to "violent" backlash... You seem to post to incite such backlash. What is the intent with this thread? Like I get your point that white people get weird and sensitive about black lives matters type topics- I personally don't understand that and white people who whine about it annoy the hell out of me also. But really, just let it go. You aren't going to change the way most people think and a lot of the stuff you post seems to deliberately poke at people. Believe me, I've had white boys crying in my face about how the world is cruel to them... All you can do is laugh and walk away because they just don't listen anyway. Most people have a really hard time looking at the life through the perspective of another. I've seen you post some rude shit about LGBT issues, so you can at least understand the perspective white people have when it comes to not understanding how it is to be black. Intelligent people know Prince was black. Intelligent people realize the ultimate reason BLM exists. Intelligent people are trying their best to end institutional / systematic racism. Intelligent people ignore the haters and don't try to start ish. Surprise, surprise.

Race in America is way more complicated than represented on this site. I'm sure Prince understood Race as the construct that it is. Especially, with Creole heritage in his background, 40 years of worldly travel and dealings with the racist music industry. As a Black man who happens to be "mixed", I understand the needs of his audience, and the larger public, to attempt to claim him with racial terms that are both familial and universal.
