Surprised Quest hadn't seen the Yokohama footage before.
And to those who regret the first recording of the song didn't survive- it still the same song.

Oh i dunno man, 1999 the New Master is the same song.

Still though, there's no way this song could ever live up to what it is in our heads.

Speaking of new masters, supposedly Prince re-recorded most of his back catalogue up through D&P. I for one would love to hear all of these, especially the For You, Prince and Dirty Mind albums.

whofarted I really really really REALLY hope that's a lie. That would be such a pure & ridiculous waste of time. Those recordings are what they are, & they're amazing. Ooooh wee hmm

Not a lie, he re-recorded them so he could have versions that he owned. Sure the songs are great in their original form, to me though, hearing a new interpretation of these songs many years later would be a very satisfying experience. Much like how I look forward to hearing the different directions he takes his songs live year after year, and much like I enjoyed the maxi singles in the days of old where he would have different versions of the songs he released on the ablums.

Don't worry. That rumor was already squashed by Prince's camp. I could go and find it, but what's the point. Folks are just going to say the same thing in a different thread. Gets old.

Wait, was it???

I thought prince's camp said the opposite? Is the Purple Medley not composed of bits of it?

If so i would love to see that info, because clearly I am under the impression from what I have read that it happened. I am cool with being wrong, I would like the source of that info if possible so in the future I can post more accurately on this topic.

I really would love to hear "For You". That record is so 1978..it would be interesting to hear it with modern equipment and instruments.....Questlove left no descriptions of "Wally"...Still waiting for him to get back to me about the original and uncut "P.R" film he saw.

As the estate is faced with a crippling tax bill in January, we may hear some unreleased material a lot sooner than we thought.

Regardless, glad to hear this is out there.

The point in time when Prince said this was a point in time when he was talking a lot of smack, and trying to leverage things in negotiations with WB. I really doubt he got around to re-recording much of anything, and if he did, I'd expect it to just be "live" sounding versions of the song with the NPS bandmates, i.e., the last thing in the world I'd ever want to hear.

People need to get rid of these crazy expectations and just enjoy, or not enjoy, the song based on the merit of the song itself.

Never heard wally but I have heard Prince hurt and vulnerable, when it's more than a device used for a song, it's devestating. Avalanche, Way Back Home and I Love You But I don't Trust You Anymore. all amongst my top Prince faves and all songs where he more or less drops any attempts to hide himself behind anything else. I'm sure he had his reasons for being so elusive in much of his work as in "The question of u" 'shall I become naked? no image at all?" I'm sure it was a protective thing but...the potency of when all bets were off and whatever he was feeling was so powerful that it made him abandon all that, some of his very best stuff. So, i can only assume Wally was from that same cloth.

Exactly. Which is why so little of the last 20 years captured the passion of the first ten. It happens. People get older. When you stay in the studio and record non-stop, tour non-stop, and don't live your life the way you did before you were so famous that you couldn't walk down the street-- don't allow yourself to be hurt -- stop allowing others to say no -- it becomes difficult to write about things that drip with passion. Hate. Love. Longing. Loss. Anger. Fear. There wasn't a lot of that in his music for a very long time. It came out mostly in the live performances. But not a lot on record. Once everyone wants you, wants to be you, you don't have to chase. You are no longer writing songs like "Something In The Water Does Not Compute."

I'm talking specifically songs like:

Listen to "Dark" from Stars & Bars. Don't know what got into him in that performance -- but again -- nothing like it on record in decades. Not that the music released during that time period isn't worthy of listening to. Just saying that folks are missing out when they say 20Ten is their favorite record. Or "Future Love Song" is their favorite song.

There was nothing like the Prince that would let him be vulnerable that way -- even if only briefly -- before screaming, or allowing the guitar to scream repeatedly for him. Just my two cents.

From AnnaStesia10: Do you have a link to the Stars and Bars Monte Carlo 5/94 performance. The link attached does not have. sad

That's because it's a bootleg, which we may discuss but not ask for at prince.org

really? I always thought for you was damn near perfect as was. the sound is pristine, before he started using the heavy synths and the home studios (which worked very well I might add)

Imo it's not that it was perfect or not perfect, it is that it would give one a window into where Prince was creatively at the time the new version is created, what new instruments would he use, what transitions would he add, keep, how would he change the vocal arrangements, etc, just too many cool things to list.

I would take a dozen versions of every song, much like I enjoy the multiple dozen versions of the live songs, and the studio alternate versions that he used to release on maxi cd's.

the one thing he didn't have, just my opinion, was great songs. Outside of baby, all the album did was showcase his musicianship, his potential as a producer but I never thought the songs were good. boy did he fix that with the next album, a good 80 percent of it was simply amazing, even though it didn't sound nearly as perfect as for you.
