Also today: Soft & Wet released 38 years ago

Even though the album was out already, June 7th 1978 is the release date of his first single ever!

And still a great track!

.

Princevault:

Soft And Wet is the first single from Prince's first album For You, marking Prince's first ever single. It was released two months after the album, on Prince's 20th birthday (whether this timing was intentional or coincidental is not known).

The b-side, So Blue, was also taken from the album. The promo release included a mono mix of Soft And Wet, not available elsewhere.

The single reached number 92 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and number 12 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles Chart.

Soft And Wet sold 350,00 copies in the USA.

That's really cool. I'd seen his picture in all of the music magazines (especially "Right On!" where he did his 1st interview), but "Soft And Wet" was never played on the popular R&B radio stations out here.

Uh, "Soft and Wet" was released a month before the album, not after. March 7 is when "Soft and Wet" came out, and April 7 for the album.

Strangely, the next single wasn't released until near the end of the year.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Not saying you're wrong, but Discogs also says June 7.

Yeah I saw that. It just doesn't seem logical that a single is released after the album. (This isn't 1985 with ATWIAD.) These were old record company days, and a month prior seems the more reasonable date. Wikipedia notes that too.

I have a spreadsheet in calendar form with releases & dates. Oddly, an older version has April 7 for both the album and the single. I'm not sure if that was a typo on my part, or it's how I read it when I created the spreadsheet. It's since been corrected to March 7, though.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I checked wikipedia, and English site says indeed March 7.

Dutch site says June 7.

French and Italian site say April 7.

Well let's just say its 38 years old this year.. wink

I'm only 48, and I found Prince in 1979. It's crazy to think it's been so long since that first record, isn't it? I just got the remaster vinyl a couple of weeks ago. I was never much into For You, so it's been nice to reacquaint myself with it.

Regarding those dates, it could have very well been released in different countries on different days. We're probably both right for a different country or something.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Crazy indeed.. I'm 41 and really started following Prince in the Lovesexy days. Also have been re-discovering a lot of albums lately which I haven't paid much attention to for years. A lot to (re)discover fortunately!
