To be honest, none of his personal life really mattered to me in the greater context of The Music.

I am kind of pissed as I write this. At my work we were celebrating a birthday for a co-worker and someone mentioned that it was Prince's birthday. I said yeah and everyone knows I am the Prince fan in the office so I was telling them how it had been declared Prince Day in Minnesota. One of my co-workers, who I generally like, said "So we're celebrating long time drug users now." She said it low and I had to stifle immediate anger and disappointment at the comment. It was so misguided and yet it will be the way a lot of people think about Prince. No one understand the anger and disappointment that all of us hardcore feel that things didn't go differently. I cannot judge Prince, why he did what he did, why he didn't get help, etc. But it won't be the way I remember him or why it is Prince Day or why several monuments turned purple the day after he died. Prince wasn't a saint, he was an enormously talented human being with flaws and shortcomings just like the rest of us. But to judge someone and to negate the positive he did by saying that Prince Day is celebrating a drug user is massively missing the point.

I like what you say in your post. Way to go!!

And "a co-worker who I generally like...". Sorry to say, but I had to laugh when I read it. I could say something like that as well.

But seriously: I hope it won't get in the way of your relationship with your co-worker though.
As I often say: we see our co-workers more hours per day than our loved ones.

Unfortunately wink biggrin

But to get back on topic: I most definitely will remember him the way he lived. It brought me much joy and fun and it still does.

I am fortunate that the people I work most closely with, as well as my immediate family, know how much Prince meant to me and have been very respectful of that when he comes up in conversation. I've learned to ignore, for the most part, all the haters on various social media sites. They detest not getting the attention they crave. They live to get a rise out of others. And I refuse to give them what they want.
Nothing about the way he died will diminish my admiration for, and devotion to, the man. It doesn't take away from his accomplishments, his talent, or the contributions he made (both personal and professional) during his lifetime. (None of the detractors could hold a candle to him in comparison.)
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I don't know about everybody else but yes, it was all about the way he lived, the kind of man he was. We don't know all the reasons yet to know why he died, but all it did was rob us of him and him of growing old. I can't imagine having the memories be about anything but him and his music. Years from now we will all remember him, the concerts, the videos, his voice, not any of the other things and rumors. He was a beautiful man and that's what I'll remember.

Halloween is coming, so be prepared.

If someone knocks on my door dressed as a dead Prince, they better believe they can come back as a zombie.
