The Prince of the 80's was a very different man compared to the Prince of the 2010's...

different interpretations of the song but I know that one thing he was saying was that not everyone can be the star, a fact he mentioned again in the RS interview about the Time's breakup and how Jesse Johnson wanted to be the big cheese but didn't have the charisma of Morris. He also alluded to their drug habits at the time "whatcha puttin' in your nose, is that where all their money goes?" Morris had a bad coke habit that derailed his career and everyone blamed Prince at the time when it was most likely a lot of other issues. He's right about what he says though, if you look at things objectively, not everyone can be on top. that fact causes a lot of problems because everyone is trying to act like the guy on top. causes problems in the workplace, problems in society as people commit crimes trying to be more than what they are, all ideas fed to them since birth, the American Dream is really a lie for most people. Yet, we have a nation of privileged and entitled people, even our homeless think they are owed money, owed pity, owed a home. Prince was pretty deep and on target much of the time.

Well, I know what Prince was trying to tell me in 1985 and it wasn't about death and dying. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I think Prince was trying to tell us something in just about every song he sang.

ya, he had a bad coke habit, as for the rest of the time, i wouldn't know. But Morris had problems with coke, in the book Poplife, Pepe Willie was quoted saying that he Morris couldn't even pay his rent at one point.

don't worry ecnirp, I believe artists are in touch with the metaphysical and that they do tell us things, even across decades. Elvis told his whole story before his career even properly started with the brillaint "Mystery Train".

Oh yeah, he had a big coke habit back in the day. He and Vanity used to snort it together. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Well, not the whole country... But, there was a national epidemic. I lived in Florida at the time and coke was everywhere. I even saw people snort it before work. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Folks, Prince foretold nothing with his lyrics, I will never understand the psychology behind forcing these lyrics to actually mean something, as if we would all feel better if he knew this was going to happen. He did NOT know this was going to happen, he did not foretell anything in his lyrics, any correlation is mere coincidence. Prince I am sure was as shocked as the rest of us that he left this world so early. "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

There was a thread the other day asking us how Prince's music will be perceived in 100 or 200 years from now... . ...it looks like folks are already laying the path for him to become the future's Nostradamus. . Prince was a musician. A talented musician. I firmly believe he was a genius. . He was not a fortune teller. . The conspiracy stuff is weirding me out.

But yes, there was a huge explosion or it in the 80's. Not everyone was on it, but I was seeing it's highest per capita use since...well...since forever.

What you putting in your nose? He also references (although I dont know if this verse is about Morris):
Is the poverty bringing you down? So yeah, anti-drug song. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

some people thought the whole song was one of condescension, I don't agree. I don't think he was gloating over the fact that he was onee of the lucky ones. I believe the song is patently about how people are never happy and satisfied with what they have, they always feel like they deserve more.
