Men: Your opinion on Prince as a "Sex Symbol"

I was just curious what Prince's male fans thought of how women responded to Prince. He had so many beautiful girlfriends and wives and female fans who had such an undeniable attraction to Prince. What makes it so interesting is his persona/image defied the masculine archatype throughout history and challenged manly stereyotypes and we women LOVED him...as male fans why do you think Prince resonated so much with women? Did you find the "Prince is so sexy" threads annoying/perplexing?

Interesting question. Never had a problem with the "P is sexy" threads..He put it all out there for the ladies, and they gravitated to it. Most of the women I've been around or with loved P, so that's always been a bonus for me. He knew how to connect with women's feelings and thoughts and at the same time his inner self. Women like that stuff, right? wink

I don't find them annoying or perplexing; I tend to find them disinteresting and usually just ignore them. In this thread, if I understand you correctly, you are asking how did Prince being a sex symbol impact how we viewed him or his work. I hope I understand your question. As such, I recognized that he was a sex symbol by the women females always reacted to him, but I guess I was so into the music, he's lyrical themes/subject matter of individuality, and how he was always growing as a musician and lyricist that I never had time to pay attention to it. Having been a fan since Dirty Mind--I like the first two albums, but Dirty Mind made me a fan--girls would always talk about how fine or freaky Prince seemed, but I always felt his work was about more than just that. However, the first time I really became aware of him being a sex symbol was watching Purple Rain in the theatre and hearing a few females make that sound/grunt they make when they see a fine dude or hearing them scream when he pulled his shirt back while singing "The Beautiful Ones." I thought it was funny how the females reacted, but, again, I was so into the wonderful amalgamation of sounds and the theme of individuality that I realized that not everyone liked Prince for the same reasons that I did. But, that was cool. They have their reasons and I have mine. I was just happy that I had an artist that made the music I liked and discussed the subject matter that was important to me.

Never understood his sex appeal, as a guy who grew up in the 80s all the variables seemed to defy convention. But there is no denying he drove the ladies crazy. As a gay guy, I never found him attractive. I admire the tremendous scope of his creativity and amazin music. Not sure I've ever met another gay guy that was into him, physically.

This is a strange one to answer without sounding stupid. As a heterosexual man, I thought Prince was truly beautiful and probably the only man I would ever think that of.

I used joke with my wife, and say I'd leave her for him. That sounds stupid, but prince's appeal was that everyone male or female recognised his beauty and sexiness. He played up on it too.

He made it ok for us to be sensitive, be strong without being butch. I found a lot of inspiration from they way he was. Strangely I have always felt madly attracted to girls, yet I can't do the macho lad chat stuff. . I always felt more comfortable with girls company, and again prince kind of made that more normal.

He was unique. Let's face which male fan didn't dream of dressing and grooming like Prince? We know we would look stupid, we wanted to be him. How the hell did he pull it off. He did probably cos he was a SEXY MF... prince

As a guy, he was my first man-crush back in the day and he really pushed my idea of sexual identity, presentation, and attraction (especially with the 1999 lp full length and singles inserts razz). Game. Over.

That's my quote from the dream thread. I'm not entirely sure I ever thought about Prince as a man or woman. He seemed to encapsulate both to a degree that redefined what it meant to be human, not just a man. My thoughts on the threads related to his sexiness? All of them combined will barely give the man's sex appeal its due. He was sexier than any man, but I also thought of him to be sexier than any woman out there. So yea, bring the eye candy razz.

All that said, I think his appeal to women went beyond sex (though that was definitely a part of it). He empowered women. If you look at his track record for employment, he hired women from day one. And I don't buy that it was just to have his own eye candy around razz. Honestly, I believe it came from a deeper part of him. Like African-Americans, he knew that women have been disenfranchised in this country for a long time and did his best to put women in positions of power.

I took a woman to see Prince once and sort of thought it was a date. She stared at him the entire concert, almost as if she forgot who brought her there. She had never seen him in concert and wasn't really even a casual fan. So, after that I sort of understood the power he had. As a straight dude, I find it hard not to stare at him. I think this moment on "New Girl" sums it up best. He has an aura about him that even straight guys can't deny. Nice to see some of us are man enough to admit it.

Really enjoying this discussion. As a female I have wondered what you guys thought of him as he really appealed to both sexes and this was obvious at concerts. You go to Beyoncé and it's mainly women or gay men there (well in Australia) But prince has such a strong heterosexual following. I love it that he touched all of us and as a group together. Missing him more each day. Purple tears 💔☔️😰

Don't want to spoil your theory but the reality is that if Prince were working as an usher in a movie theater you and all those other women wouldn't find him sexy.

.

His fame, his cash...suddenly Prince Rogers Nelson became sexy.

This is possibly true - I am sure.

But then I am sure a lot men if they saw women they thought were "hot and sexy" without make and dressed up too would not find them sexy either? This is just how things are. The sad thing is also as celebrities age things are not always that way but when the person is lovely from the inside out, it always wins and I think Prince would have always been a winner at any age as women are drawn to the soft senstive souls - so he was the whole real deal. Not just a sex symbol, but you got the lot.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Nah, I'd of fell for the eyes, the voice and the 2 front teeth regardless. Especially if he knew how to work 'em. And lest we forget other things were at play too, that have nothing to do with his music, ya know.

In high school I was told I acted like Prince. Not in a physical sense of mimicking him, more of being super intense when hitting on all the fine ladies, even if sometimes they had a boyfriend (a la Beautiful Ones). I learned one reason women who love Prince is because almost all his songs put women on a pedestal. Most of them are about some sexy woman breaking his heart or playing with his emotions. He showed vulnerability and strength at the same time. It was an emotional undercurrent in his whole style. Any guy who learned that early on like me never forgot it.

I'm straight but in the early 90s my best friend was gay. In fact he with his significant other and me and another straight guy all lived together in a 3 bedroom house we were renting. Anyway, it was at the height of my Prince fandom. Not a single gay person I met was sexually attracted to Prince. And they wern't shy about telling me. Everyone knew I was into Prince. I even went as Prince to a costume party, which was 99% from the gay community. I did the typhoon hairdo from D&P era and everything. Damn I wish I still had the pics.

I honestly don't think women would lust for Prince if he wasn't a singer. Many of them will deny it but it's close to the truth. But he did have an exotic look so what do I know?

I'm a straight guy but I completely understand Prince's sex appeal. Just because I'm a man doesn't mean I can't see it… hell, I thought Prince was sexy! Sure, I wasn't lusting after him but I found him attractive and magnetic as a live performer, you just couldn't keep your eyes off him. I thought in the KIss video he was very sexy, seductive and cool, and I feel comfortable saying that as a man, although I did have the serious hots for the female dancer in that video!… haha. Prince taught me a lot about women and both female and male sexuality. Despite all his playing with gender identity I always understood from a young age he was a heterosexual man completely at ease in his own sexuality. His confidence taught me a lot, and the fact he expressed feminine sides to himself whilst still always having a sense of masculinity was inspiring - it showed me women value nuance and layers, and not just a 2D representation of masculinty that society shows us. Honestly, male fans know Prince is sexy, they just connect in a different way. I always appreciated that women loved him, it was a joy. Ultimately I'm a fan of the music but yeah, Prince was one hell of a sexy MF!

I am a straight male and always found Prince to be incredibly charistmatic and a "pretty man". I'm sure part of his appeal to me is that he does have some feminine beauty, even though I never had any sexual thoughts about him. I always enjoyed seeing and hearing about women go crazy over him and of course I get why he was so lusted after. He was physically attractive and an incredible artist who made beautiful music.

It wasn't just about his physical appearance, though he was beautiful. He was the total definition of the perfect man. His songs, his flirty sense of humor, his shyness and so on. Even now if I watch vidoes of him I just smile at his beauty and..... yes sexiness. He is so missed.

I, as a woman, never truly felt "turned on" by him, but by his music. I always felt he acted/reacted 'too over the top', in either direction and I found that confusing. I can't deny his beauty as a man or his talent as an Artist, that is the ultimate sex appeal, IMO. I'm extremely grateful for such a rich and wondeful legacy he has left us, though.

As a straight male...

I remember as a kid buying Purple Rain era singles and thinking he was ugly.

As a teenager going to the Diamonds & Pearls tour, I thought he was the most beautiful example of the male form in the world. He was still a sight to behold right up until the afro, basically.

As for him not getting much attention without stardom, remember the stories of his midteens. Not a particularly good looking kid, absolutely tiny, and he had a revolving door of girls even then. I think he would have attracted the ladies whatever he did.
