Parade is certainly one of his best in my opinion, so I have no problem with the #2 ranking. He has so many great ones that my order tends to change over time, but Parade has always been and remains a favoirte.

i loved emancipation, of course not every song was a gem, but a good 2/3's i loved.

.

You loved two thirds of it. Then clearly you see it should have been a double album, not a triple album.

More is not always better.

I would find it very difficult to rank Prince's albums. I have a top six (PR, SOTT, 1999, Lovesexy, Parade and Black Album) out of which I could never justify why I would place one above the others. Then there are about 10 albums I absolutely love (including Phase 2 and AOA), 10 hit and miss and the rest worth for a few songs. My least favourite is Emancipation. I understand that there are some gems there, but I find it very difficult to listen to!

What a goofy list. They put the One Night Alone piano album at #30. And Parade is not even in the the Toip 10 for me. Black Album should be way higher.

You are so right. It is easy to place some albums on the lower ranks, but top five? It really is a foolish game to play. If they are in a top five of the Prince catalogue then, man, any one of them would be a damn masterpiece.

Yes one of his best indeed..
Took a few listens to get used to..
Just imagine if " Old Friends for Sale", "All my dreams",
& "There's others here with us" were on this soundtrack.
Then it would really be very close to Purple Rain
& Sign o'the times (1999 as well)

You could name 1999, Purple Rain, SOTT or Parade as Prince's greatest album. You also could make a case for 2 Time albums a Madhouse album, Judith Hill's record, The Truth, Rainbow Children. Funny thing is that, for casual Prince fans, if you really like one of the records chances are good the others don't quite do it for you. Prince was great like that.

This would never be at the top, if I had to make a list. ATWIAD either. I doubt that I would put Parade in the top ten. I was glad when he was done with that period. I was overjoyed when SOTT came out.

He's in the Big White Mansion. RIP Prince

I would at least put Gold Experience and Rainbow Children ahead of Parade

Overall I think the list is right on. The later albums are difficult for most people and you have to have the taste for them. I personally would rate Come much higher, but overall I think it's on the button.

Good list, Come and LotusFlower should be a little higher.

We're here, might as well get into it.

I could see that. I would have "Purple Rain" at #1, and "Parade" at #2. It really is a great album.

For me "Sign O The Times" is like The Beatles "White Album." Yes, some absolutely brilliant stuff on there, but the double album aspect of it hurts it. Not the knockout punch that a single album could have delivered. More like jabs just looking to score points along the way.

Well said!

After his death I went out to watch purple rain on the big screen for the first time. And like Parade, the music has held up do well 30 years later. Any artist today could release these two albums today and no one would batt an eye about its sound being retro. I think even the fashion worn by Prince, the time and Appolonia look badass to this day. He didn't follow trends so that made instantly impervious to becoming dated.

Bowie as awesome as he was, knew a lot about his contemporary avant guard art movement and used it. So Bowie while following the beat of his own drum, he was influenced by a dated art movement because of how informed he was.

Prince didn't give a shit about what anyone else was doing and it shows in his music and his style in the 80's. He future proofed a huge chunk of his music .

1 1999

2 Dirty Mind

3Parade

4 Rainbow Children

5 SOTT (tough, cause to me this is an incredible collection of songs, not an "album")

I always thought is never got the credit it deserved. I balked at this list placing it over Purple Rain but I certain does belong in the top 5. What say U about this ranking?

It's always personal. I thought Batman was the greatest Prince album until I worked my way through my brother's entire Prince CD collection. Maybe it's part of the newspaper editorial style guide to always quote Prince as The Purple Rain Singer in case aliens are visiting the Earth and the only radio signal they ever liked was Prince and they were trying to take themselves to their leader.

So Parade is like Fighting The Alien and once the Revolution disbanded there was no alien to fight, assuming the alien was the small grey man that put all of Paisley Park the building together. No word from the 9/11 responders eh? Well, we set them up to knock them down ultimately.

(did you get that, that was a subtle joke about Paisley Park opening on 9/11/1987 in much the same way The Rainbow Children was a minor Act of God pre 9/11/2001)

anyway, Purple rain is the superior album because it is the culmination of shit loads of garage band and Parade is just overdubs for a sequel

For sure top three for me. ATWIAD and SOTT are my other top two. My reasoning for these surpassing PR and 1999 is that I played the heck out of these two and really prefer the ones I didn't "run in the ground". I suppose it's not a fair ranking of the actual brilliance of the works.

Lotusflow3r is ranked way too low. In years to come this album will be more and more appreciated. I've always loved it. I've always been more in love with Prince's musician side, not his popstar side, (which I love too) as most casual fans view him. This is a great list that falls apart arond #15... HitandRun phase 2 better than Batman, Musicology, and Graffiti Bridge??? ...Not so sure...

I love lotus too, but it's saddled with mplsound/the worst album ever made. That takes it down a lot of notches.

True, I'm just talking Lotusflow3r as it's own disc, as if it where a stand alone, which it sould've been. Good news as the 3 set was so cheap it didn't matter. MPLSound had a few fun tracks on it though wink
