To what Prince song/album do you owe your existence?

Apologies if there's already a thread on this:

To what Prince song or album do you owe your existence? Or, if you're older than his entire discography, what event can you attribute to either an album or a song?

I read that Stevie Wonder article and Prince had me doing math. lol

Maybe, just maybe I owe my existence to For You. I'm sure it was just an amazing coincidence Prince performed at the VMAs and the very next day my very Catholic school decided to start sex ed.

I Will. Got me through a dark time in my life. Such a gentle, but determined song. Thanks, Prince.

Mixtape or the entire album? Either way...

I remember the days when if someone gave you a tape or a CD, especially a mix, and they weren't your parents, relatives, or music teacher it meant, "I want you" or "I love you".

The same songs which mostly or entirely went over my head as a kid back then have completely different meanings to me now. lol

Aw yeah, I'd spend days crafting a mixtape for That Special Someone. cool

But in this case, it was the Purple Rain album. And, I might add, this was in the days before auto-reverse... which meant when one side ended, you had to stop the action, get up, flip that sucker over, and then get back to business! lol

Based on calculations it's a longshot to see myself being concieved to anything by him since that would've been in Aug of 91'....Although "Gett Off" was just coming out then eek Uh..I suddenly have questions. Lol.

This, but I wouldn't say I "owe my existence" to it.

Changed my life for sure but so did "Physical Graffitti", "Dark Side of the Moon", "Stand", "Axis Bold as Love" and "Blood Sugar Sex Magic". So did "Purple Rain" for that matter. But "1999' was the first time I felt like I discovered uniquely my own and in a style that validated me. "Validated" is a better word I think. 1999 "cemented my tastes" such as it is.

I liked so many different kinds of music and I think that's what I always dug about Prince. He made this incredibly rich stew from all the right ingredients from all the right chefs; Sly, Jimi, Marvin, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Little Richard, Santana, Zeppelin, Pairlament/Funkadelic...everything I liked. He even threw in punk and new wave to cetain extent - Bowie, Adam Ant, Blondie, The Clash, Howard Jones...and even some Beatles, Stones and Elton John. With the right kind of ears, you could hear some Floyd and some Zappa even.

There was even some James Taylor, Elton John, Stones, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, Richie Havens, Joni MItchell...not to mention a lot of disco acts like EWF, Ohio PLayers, Slave, KC and the Sunshine Band, etc.

It's like if you made a music tree, Prince would be at the top and you can just draw forks and branches covering all the stuff he was great at and all the influences he drew on.

But, yeah..

TL/DR: 1999 . That record has EVERYTHING.

It also can be any Prince song/album that existed in general circulation at that time (unless your parents were super hard core fans who have keys to the vault and a time traveling Delorean) as well because tapes and CDs existed.

Yes, everyone in my class had lots of questions that day. The question and answer box was discontinued because of everyone's questions. hah! falloff

wink

It's way worse for vinyl. You absolutely have to stop the record (and then flip it over) or it gets damaged. (I barely remember vinyl as a kid. But my little Fisher Price record player did not handle adult records that well. )
