Why am I always disappointed when I hear Prince live?? I LOVE watching him perform, but I really hate the way he changes up his music, until sometimes tracks are practically unrecognizable. I realize most artists do this to some extent, but Prince takes rearranging to another level. I can never sing along with the song, which it what disappoints me so much... Alas, I'll take whatever I can get at this point. But still! No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

Wow.. I wouldn't know, to be honest. I'm often disappointed when I hear the studio version of songs I have heard performed live. To each his/her own, I guess.

This is precisely why Prince was my favorite live artist and why I'm so into collecting his concert boots! I loved to anticipate and hear how he would switch up the arrangements from show to show, and tour to tour. No two shows were the same, which is what made Prince one of the most exciting live acts. This is what I'm going to miss the most about him. If the songs are going to sound just like the album, I might as well stay home and listen to the album. I quickly grow tired of studio versions of songs, though, and need to hear new arrangements to freshen up the experience.

Wow I am shocked at this thread - I prefer the changed up version, if I wanted to hear an album version I would have stayed home and played the CD and saved money. Seriously? He was a genius live and this is why I love boots so much and will miss him so much til the day I meet my own fluffy cloud in the sky. Thank you Prince for every note you left behind π

He never disappointed me live either, those memories will stay forever

Since he passed, all I can listen to is live. I think the OP is the type that prefers a live version to sound like the album with an audience. I don't know why you can't sing along, I have no problem with it. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

. Yes, you can say that. I prefer it to sound like the album. But that's not to say I didn't enjoy him live! NOBODY does a better show. But I just come into a show with expectations, and he always did something different... No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

That quote pretty much encapsulates why I'm a Prince fan right there.

I have no idea why you feel this way. Prince has always been best live IMO.

Probably because you are young enough to be raised on the fake live music that is the order of the day and you are not bred on REAL music by REAL musicians.. Prince was the greatest live musician on Earth - period. Save America - Stop Illegal Immigration. God bless America. PEACE

I never had any problem, he made it easy and obvious when to sing, clap your hands or jump up and down. Crowd participation was always great at any show i went to. I don't understand this thread.

. Umm, I'm 48. I stopped listening to the radio in the 90s. No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

. OP here: What's there to understand?? I have an opinion that you don't. Doesn't make it any less valid of a thread topic. No-one else could understand you, you're too complex. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you...

So what are you expecting as a response? You are asking a question and you expect someone on this board to answer it for you or are you looking for people who agree with you?

I agree ... The medley obsession is really vegas cheesy and kills any momentum a song has ... Unfortunately his extended live versions are just as bad ... He is was more inclined to play one verse and jam on a one chord boring chant than he was to give us 3 verses a bridge and 3 choruses we can enjoy ... To the average ear this may seem impressive but to me it seems lazy and uninspired ... I was happy on the celebration tour when he played full songs but it has been rare that we get more than 10 full songs and its usually the crap like chapter and verse that he plays in full instead of the good songs ... I mean .. I enjoy "the one" but a full version of the question of u would be very satisfying .. I blame his lack of qualified musicians to work with ... He got no pushback on his cheesy medley vegas dreams

if you can't see and hear the brilliance of what was the most amazing live musician of our times I feel bad for you. Wondering what live bands don't disappoint you to have something to compare it to... The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Why you are disappointed is really only a question you can answer OP.

As someone who has no desire to hear other people sing at a Prince show, I applauded this propensity of his. We donβt mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Alas, I'll take whatever I can get at this point. But still! That quote right there is why a lot of singers don't use their entire range when picking songs to record. I've never seen a Prince concert live alas, but I've seen plenty of takes where the audience sings along, so the rearranging doesn't seem to be that big of a problem. OP, Are you disappointed because you can't have that collective experience of singing along like the audience did? He always seemed like he was having the time of his life on stage.

That happened to me with The Question of U, Sexy MF, Damn U and most of The Gold Experience, all of which were performed live before tha albums came out.
