Best Prince Photographers

Who do you think is the best "Prince photographers," that has taken most Prince's best moments?

Some of my favorites include Nancy Bundt, Steve Parke and Terry Gydesen.

The thing is, Terry did that one project, and that was it. Steve Parke is one cool dude. He's very talented, in more than just photography or artwork. Sam Jennings is a cool guy, too. I did enjoy Jeff Katz work with Prince in the 80s until he left. (Parke's first job was the "Glam Slam" video stage.)

.

I remember people lambasting these guys for what they did, but I only saw one other person offer up anything as an alternative. I forget the guy's moniker, but he used to make artwork for the monthly NPGMC releases in 2001. I think it was something like Xstatic or something. Prince tried to hire him on, but he turned it down. That was more artwork, not photography.

.

All three of the aformentioned guys did great work with Prince. The Planet Earth album cover was one of my favorites. I mean, whether you like them or not (and really - what's your real reason for not liking a photographer that worked for Prince?), working for Prince had to be incredible - hard and exciting all at once. Not just as a person on staff, but as the person who helped visually interpret Prince's music, and projects. Tourbooks, merchandise artwork, album covers, promo photos, stage design, etc. That's a lot to do. The experience has to be invaluable.

.

I think Jenning's stuff (who started during Love4OneAnother days) that was shot for magazines, etc was some of the best pictures I'd seen of Prince in a long time. However, there's a picture of Prince w/ his black cloud guitar, that was eventually used as a basis for The Purple Medley cover, that is one of my all time favorite pictures of Prince. (I still have the poster rolled up and stored away.)

.

They've both shared incredible stories on their Facebook pages, and I'd encourage everyone to find & read them. Prince talking to Parke about photographing naked woman for the Emancipation artwork is hysterical.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Is best to judge photogrpahy by the images that were not from in concert during a show (unless it's behind the scenes). In concert the poses and lighting and set is already done, and the photographer is snapping thousands of photos and then picking the best ones and reframing them and tweaking them for publishing use. That kind of makes it a generic job outside of technical prowess.

Jeff Katz.

Speaking of Herb Ritts, where can one find these outtakes in higher quality?

Jeff Katz, Afshin Shahidi, Steve Parke. And of course Randee St. Nicholas.

I think Steve Parke is a great photographer and artist but I like his own work much better than the stuff he did for NPGMC or his album covers. I wasn´t really feeling the designs that he and Prince came up with. Probably because most album covers up until 1993 had a certain style and aura that was lacking in the mid 90s to late 90s releases. But I don´t blame Steve for it, nor Prince. It just wasn´t my cup of tea.

I agree...his style was so distinct you would know it was him just by the photographs. I really think he was an amazing photographer who really captured the "essance" of his subjects in his candid yet artistic photos.
