Power 6? You should get your Prince card revoked, no way Dirty Mind and Controversy can be excluded.

Prince card revoked?! Sheesh, it's not like I put "Very Best of Prince" on the list. This could have been very easily the Power 8, Power 12, Power 30. The 6 albums here to me represent the critical and commercial peak of Prince's powers whereas I look at For You through Controversy as the ascension to the throne. As my wife will attest though, I am wrong about many things.

Your wife is correct again. The reason the Power 6 makes no sense is that Prince garnered considerable international acclaim for Dirty Mind -- it set him apart from his contemporaries as a new vibrant rebellions talent. Dirty Mind is the foundation of Prince's new sound. So I take an artistic view while you take a commercial view -- guess which view was most important to Prince?

Sheesh! It's bad enough I am probably going to get my Prince card revoked. I have now apologized 4 times for the omission of Dirty Mind and Controversy. You wish to include For You and Prince, also two excellent classic albums. I can only beg humble forgiveness. Someone do a Power 10 Thread (or Power 11 if you include The Black Album) and blow this thread off the page. razz

Don't worry. the mainstream view is he got better with each album. Sure, production values and songwriting maybe, maybe not. I don't know why i like 1999 more than PR, or Parade more than SOTT. I might like Lovesexy more than Parade sometimes. Ultimately, everyone knows Dirty Mind was his first real mission statement. It's all so very confusing! lol

As good as these albums were, Dirty Mind and Controversy were made before Prince's breakthrough, so you can make a point that Prince's glory years started in 1982- the first year he had big international hits.

Thank you!!!! biggrin lol That was the reason why I used the Power 6 designation but it wasn't meant to lessen the power of the albums before or after. I probably should have changed the title of the thread a long time ago which would have clarified the issue but the masochist in me has felt I somehow deserve the critiques I have received for my omissions. I could have used this joke a long time ago but since I think I started the thread at night, the leaving out of Prince's first 2 (or 4) albums can be attributed to a nocturnal omission.
