I wonder how long it took him after this interview to change the way he did interviews. I feel like I had this interview on a Picture Disc at one point or on a cassette tape but I could be wrong. Thanks for posting.

Also the interviewer asked him if he has problems with gov't officals after him because his lyrics are too risque. He said no but he hopes he gets that big. Of course he got that with Tipper Gore and the PMRC and the congressional hearings and Darling Nikki, etc.

I had this on Vinyl too from my local record store. Very revealing interview and probably one of the last times when an a journalist didn't know who he was! Interesting point about how poverty meant he knew he would have to work hard to make it.

Thank you so much for posting this. It is great to hear him at this age and time in his life. He had a path from the very beginning, didn't he? I don't know where you found it and suprised he sat for that long, but I am so glad you posted it. Peace.

I was surprised at the length too, but I bet this influenced his later stance on not doing interviews... & I bet his momma got in'nat ass for talking about her "dirty books"

First he was 22. This was when he was still shaving 2 years off his age. So the part about being a liar or a publicity stunt...well there was some truth to it. Also he was worried about being misquoted?


His voice sounds pretty much the same. He sure proved his chops!


He said he saw a video of one of his shows and he did not belive it was really him!


I has this on tape for years and I had not been able to find it so it is so cool to hear it now...and now it is saved to an MP3

My interview with Prince on the 29th of May in the year 1981 at the Sonesta Hotel in Amsterdam was prior to the concert he gave in The Paradiso. That concert was the best performance I ever saw. And the room was almost empty! After I did the interview I thought that Prince was silent most of the times. Well, listening back after all those years (and you have to listen carefully due to a bad recording walkman) it is quite okay. I interviewed Prince. Not a lot of people can say that...

PRINCE is not Latino. THAT WAS A JOKE. It's George Lopez, not Larry Lopez. He was saying that to make a joke as George Lopez is latino. Prince is a 100% black man with BLACK parents from Louisiana, him from Minnesota.

Ludicrous behaviour.

This is the interview I was referring to in the other thread. He didn't do many interviews by the time I got into him. This is all I had. it wasn't the "white media" saying it or making him something he wasn't/ isn't. And it's important to talk about why he felt he needed to lie so we can teach the future to be proud of their blackness, half blackness, quarter, a drop blackness... We all come from Africa blackness. I don't think he wasn't proud of his blackness but I think he thought he could either make himself sound more "exotic" (mind you, he said Italian, not just white)... Or it was purely marketing. Race is messed up in this country, we all do it to each other. White people can diss each other's European heritages, Black people do it depending on shade, Latinos, Asians... Definitely! However, Prince was a quintessential 100% black man by the reality and default that his parents were black. Now, as a black a person, with parents from Jamaica- I understand this well myself. Most of us arent 100% "black", it's actually quite ludicrous of an assumption to some degree that we are purely Africans due to the sad effects of colonization. However, Prince's parents identified as black, therefore so did he. This is a big problem in the black communities around the world, where people feel the need to exotify who and what they are when being black is as exotic as you can get. (Not a bias, just simply by the context itself) Being black is not exclusive to a certain location or place, which is why I believe that is.

Black Americans, especially from the South, often have plenty mixed heritage, but that's not something to play on for beauty's sake. He identified as a "brother" because he was. Nothing I've said alienates his fans that are mixed. Just because he was a unifier doesn't make him any less black than what he was. Having two black parents doesn't equate to being mixed despite generations down the line having other lineages and origins, that's simply what it is. That's like saying, "Saying Prince is black makes his caucasian european audiences invalid," no. I don't agree, I see where you're coming from but no way. He couldn't help but to be black and to be quite frank, that tactic of even exotifying (for lack of better terms) himself is a discussion that needed to be had a long time ago, but it is as if he answered those questions by being unapologetically proud of his blackness and culture openly over the last 20 years, specifically the last 5.

@Deerpath: As for his mother's dad being unknown? I'm not actually sure about that part, but I am sure that he said that in rebuttal as a joke because George inferenced, "You look like you can be latino..." so he joked back by saying they can't find his grandfather so you "never know" (Which in itself is kind of ignorant because latino isn't necessarily a look, and consistenly emphasizing that fetish is pretty sad) I think Prince looked like what he was, black.
