Trying to decide between The Question of U and Joy in Repetition is torture. Two of my absolute favs, I had to cheat I'm sorry lol Narrowing all of this down was extremely difficult lol! Also Private Joy is tied with Do Me, Baby but ah well

1) For You (it's just such a perfect album/career opener. There's a reason he kept coming back to it. All right, that was not fun. Mainly because every time there were no clear standouts. I could make a case for 2 or 3 other songs (at least) from each album. The only time I've really tried to figure out "the essential" Prince, I ended up deciding I'd give myself 1/3 of each album/project as the cream, 1/3 middle range, 1/3 the bottom (relative to the rest of the album, not to the world at large). That was way easier to do, and to feel satisfied with. That let me recognize the greatness of the obvious hit(s) and the Princely weirdness both. If I did this again 10 minutes from now it would be different. For example, I've said before that The Beautiful Ones is my favorite Prince song--it isn't on this list. How did that happen? | |
