NorthC said: Wow. That's an incredibly long way of saying "I didn't like his new music." This is sort of what I thought...that the op liked his older music. I find his newer music much more mature. Talking about sex all the time isn't really mature, actually. It spiritually or any other way. There's not always anything wrong with it but the shock factor wears off as I get older and changed spiritually. I actually learned what tact was. Op is absolutely entitled to her opinions. Absolutely!

my POV is basically the same as yours, PurpSpi.I got into Prince in 1980, when I was 12 years old. like you, Prince TOTALLY BLEW ME AWAY with his musicianship, style & audacity to challenge the "status quo" of music at that time. . . . . . . I'll see you tonight..

I've enjoyed PRN'a latter years. I love Emancipation and Phase 2. Prince was Prince which is composed of a lot of Princes. The Early Prince who mimic his rock and soul idols. The Nasty Prince, The Dance Song Prince, the Spiritual Prince, the Confident/Shy Prince. Not every fan loved all of them equally, that's a given but when you love Prince, you love Prince. I'm not going to pretend that we on the org never had a negative comment about his music but that was also part of his appeal, the dive to get in the mind of the musician and the man. Can you name another artist willing not to be a clone of themselves on every release. Prince always did went his muse took him and the fan could choose to come or not. Long Live Prince. No More Haters on the Internet.

In the 90s many factors flipped over in music and left him to spin in circles with his craft, I do enjoy his recent music 96' and on though. As an artistic he's allowed to change and what he was doing was still very quality!! Even if it wasn't like some break-through energy he spiked with in the 80s. [Edited 5/31/16 15:09pm]

I think some people just sexually and romantically invested in Prince more than others, so when he stopped being so sexually charged, the music was no longer sounded great to them.

I just don't get it. Why are haters EVEN on the org? Doesn't make sense. This is for the Prince lovers, not haters. Haters go elsewhere, please. Peace and Love. And Ps. To the other orger hating on Prince hair and dress - the man can wear his hair and dress any way he damn pleases. Show some respect! "Shut up already, damn". [Edited 5/31/16 18:15pm]

Despite my distaste for the way this post is written, I would have largely agreed with some of its core points about Prince’s post-Emancipation output until recently.
After completing my biography of Prince in about 2000, I found nothing in records like Musicology or 3121 to re-kindle my interest or to dispel my view that Emancipation was his last great work. As far as live performances, I have always had my issues with Prince outside of the aftershow context, so I didn’t find much to keep me on board there either.
However, in the course of re-connecting with Prince and people here in the course of working to update my book, my eyes have been opened somewhat. There is some great material to be discovered. Phase 2 certainly contains some fun stuff, and frankly LotusFlower (the main disc) is quite excellent. Cuts like Boom, Colonized Mind, and Dreamer can’t be discounted as meaningful parts of Prince’s canon.
As far as live stuff, being exposed to the wealth of stuff on YouTube and also the Indigo Nights record has convinced me that the key development in Prince’s career over the last 12 years is that he became quite possibly the best live performer on the planet, and certainly the greatest funk performer that there has even been. His guitar playing has improved markedly, as has his mastery as a bandleader.
So, ultimately I believe the OP quite overstates the case, despite articulating (if it can be called that) a view that some people share in some measure.
PS -- can someone tell me to how to add spaces between paragraphs on the org? Can't seem to figure it out!

As for his live performances... If you get the chance, have a look at some of his Montreux 2009 live footages, if you haven't already. THIS!
And it is really sad that someone who probably has not written one song in their life had the audacity to malign the genius of Prince. And that to say that one was waiting for his physical passing only is just the lowest human thought I have ever encountered in my life.

I actually loved him in his Afro. I remarked in that picture thread that he looked like a Messiah who demands complete surrender. And it is very stupid to say 'he didn't feel good' re: his Afro. You do understand that the man had undergone an exceptional growing curve since his Head days. From where he was looking, his hair, his appearance didn't matter (though he always looked fetching). It was the soul. And he had one of the finest souls.

It was his hair - his choice. RIP Prince. We will NEVER forget you. Thank you so much.

Like everyone here I loved p not in a romantic way just as a fellow human being and he was a great human being. Maybe I didn't love every thing he gave us but he was like a fine wine he got better with age. Every album has at least 3 great songs and pretty much something for everyone. That the original poster did not like his later stuff is thier opinion and like bum holes everyone's got one. Peace n love

I'm sorry but this has got to be the dumbest post I've ever seen. What you've just said about Prince shows more of what's wrong with you. You've not grown from your past. You like Prince bad boy, young Prince, go listen to the past on record. I can't imagine me sitting around still listening to, and wanting Michael Jackson to perform ABC or Ben...or The Osmonds, One Bad Apple. Get a grip! At this point if you've got nothing nice to say about Prince don't say it at all, give respect to those stll in mourning. Maybe you should express your feelings and emotions on how you feel to a best friend, pastor or a psychiatrist. You claim to love music and know everything about it, and appreciate a good musicians, well your way out of it sister because The Rainbow Children was amazing, and Prince One Night Alone Piano...absolutely beautiful! Anyway your not expected to mourn or miss his physical being, who's asking or expecting that of you? We lost a musical genius
They dont make Prince's anymore! And if they do, they're rare to find. Prince wasn't only the Prince that you know of, he was a human being and a friend to many, and he shared his God given gift with the world! [Edited 6/1/16 1:08am] [Edited 6/1/16 1:10am]

Exactely. Prince wasn't just some sort of disposable convenience. He was a person with a story and emotions, and like everyone of us he deserved some respect, especially at this time. I'm sorry this made you cry though Life Matters

Advice for life: if you ever feel compelled to use double exclamation marks and the word "my" in regard to someone's death, you might consider going back to bed and sleeping on it. I don't think I've seen such self-indulgent drivel here since his passing.
