'Dinner With Delores'...about Madonna?

I know this was discussed here before, but most people seems 2 think that it's not about her. While we probably will never know for sure, it seems that they had a fall out in the mid 90's. And I found this interview with Madonna for the LA Times, in 1994:

"I had dinner with Prince once, and he was just sipping tea, very daintily. I was stuffing food down my face and I was like, 'Aren't you going to eat?' " She mimics a delicate, whispered "no." "And I thought, 'Oh my God!' I have this theory about people who don't eat. They annoy me. It's something about being in control."

I think both of them weren't in the happiest place in the first half of the 90's and that they later let bygones be bygones, which is mature. So I hope this post won't result in a hate fest ..just a fun fact looking back.

My advice is to forego any dreams you had to one day join the FBI or Scotland Yard.

Very flimsy evidence!

Interesting theory. Seems to fit. But as you said, it'll be impossible to know for sure.

Well, if you really wanted to troll, you'd just say that all of his songs in the 90s were about Madonna. And then she repaid him by mocking his death in an elevator fishslap

Ugh.

well, if, and it's a big if like someone pointed out, it is true, it happened long ago. They were in good terms by the end of the 90's.

The brilliant song is a metaphor for Warner Bros and the tired outdated recording industry. WB is the greedy dinosaur expecting him to return to 1984 with the same old tricks.

If I'm not able to work in FBI, U're more than apt to work in TMZ..I think this mocking theory to be amusing. As much as one may hate Madonna, it's clear that she had a lot of respect for Prince and wouldn't do that. She's known for being clueles with her posts, but in a clumsy kind of way...but yes, U can argue with that wink

In the "Depressed About Vanity?" thread, they're saying that "D.W.D" was wriiten about a dinner that P had with Vanity (in the 90's) that didn't go too smoothly.

It's about Vanity. It's always been about her. Delores. Denise.

.

Just as a note for those who don't know, Vanity popped up a couple of years before on a Prince record, more directly. The woman in "Orgasm" from Come is Vanity's vocals from an outtake called "Vibrator". Word was that she was really suffering and struggling with kidney problems in the 90s. Prince put her on that track as a means to receive royalties - aka giving her some cash flow to help her out. It's credited only as "She knows".

The fact is that Prince was so prolific, writing songs almost everyday in certain periods of time...it wouldn't be that weird for him to write a song based on what someone said about him. Like Billy Jack Bitch, 4 instance. Like I said, we probably will never never know 4 certain, although I think it's possible that the song could be about Madonna. In 1995 there was that VH1 special in which he makes fun of Madonna's "I want you" video. There was this kind of bitterness between the two back then.

Dinner with DELORES was metaphorical ....about censorship

It's not literal ...Jesus , this site ...

Not sure how you can be so sure it's about Denise Matthews.

By the time this song was released, she was a born again Christian, and was broke and sick. Not sure what would be the point of describing her as someone showing dirty movies like some kind of whore. At that point, meeting Prince again she was more likely to launch into a sermon :

"In 1994, Vanity overdosed on crack cocaine and suffered from near-fatal renal failure. She recalled that after being rushed to the hospital, doctors said she had three days to live while on life support. She said that Jesus appeared to her at this time and spoke to her, saying, if she promised to give up her Vanity persona, he would save her. Upon her recovery, she completely renounced her stage name and career and became a born-again Christian. In 1995, she said, "When I came to the Lord Jesus Christ, I threw out about 1,000 tapes of mine — interview, every tape, every video. Everything."[9] She stated that she had chosen not to receive any further revenue from her work as Vanity, and cut off all ties with Hollywood and her former life in show business.[10] After a kidney transplant in 1997, she decided to devote her life to Christ. She made speaking engagements at churches across the United States and worldwide. "

So her appearance on Come via that moaning she did long ago in Vibrator must predate her full conversion. Again, I don't see why Prince would revisit her old self when she was trying to turn a corner and leave addiction behind.

Like others have said, the song might have some basis in a real life relationship, new or old, but it's probably not why Prince picked it at that point in his career. Some have noted it works well for either his relationship with WB or his own fans.

In any case, I'm all ears on any evidence you have.

I had heard the Madonna link b4. However on mature (immature) reflection I am now wondering if Madonna made up that story to make it sound like it was about her. A lot of prince songs don't seem to be current when released. It is feasible he dusted this off and arranged it for C&D album. Love the song anyhow.
