IF PRINCE WAS A GENRE, which Prince songs that don't sound like anything else?

These Prince songs really don't sound like anything else back then and I still think to this day.

1. Most songs on SOTT: example: Ballad of Dorothy Parker (what is that? Really? Jazz Chords over intentionally "sloppy" bumpin' Linn drums, and weird chords progression that somehow just works.

2. Mountains! CMIIW, but I don't think anyone ever came up with something like that before.

When Doves Cry, Glam Slam, I Wish U Heaven, Pop Life, and certainly many others.

.

Those non-genre songs were always the best moments when listening to a Prince album. Come on, did we really get excited when another soul ballad or funk jam popped up on the new album we were listening to? Nah. My ears always perked up when something very different came on.

.

"Loose!"

"I Wonder U'

"Strollin"

"Christopher Tracy's Parade"

"Hypno Paradise"

"Slave"

"Pheromone"

"Forever In Your Life"

"I Love U In Me"

"Cloreen Bacon Skin"

"Crystal Ball"

"I Wish U Heaven"

"Batdance"

.....

and many others...

Seriously, 'Crystal Ball'. That song is high end, other worldy, pure fantasy musical art. Never to be repeated. A song so out there, he never attempted to perform it live. How could he?! Once in a lifetime song.

It's a popular music epic that I wished he had explored more. Quite unlike anything I've ever heard from anyone The way he incorporated some of the breaks and the strings. Though structurally it has all the elements of Jazz, I reckon he might have gotten a nod from "A Day In The Life" the way he incorprated some of the breaks and the strings. It surpasses the Beatles tune for otherworldly weirdness though.

Fantasy Musical Art biggrin Great description.

Purple and Gold. All the critics love you in New York, heck maybe half the 1999 album come to think?

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...

Confusing question to me...not sure exactly what you mean. But if I had to list songs in P's catalog that sound original, these come to mind.

Question of U

Papa

Sign O' the Times

Da Bang

I Like It There

Dinner With Delores

P could make some original sounding songs. Most of his catalog isn't a copy of anything else...just himself.

There'll be more Prince music in the future, I hope, but, unfortunately it won't be performed by the man, himself.

We're going through some rough times.
