Nominated for 37 Grammy awards..

So i heard. Alright, he ended up with 7 which is a travesty considering his talent and longevity. Anyone know the full list of what songs he was nominated for? I'm interested in what was considered for a win. Even what won instead!

Ta. smile

Yeah, we'll, we'll try to imagine what silence looks like.

Well so far I got this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.or..._by_Prince

And stopped reading after I saw all the SOTT noms he didn't win. Not sure who won but I'm about to research that.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

yeah, and he only got 7. i've always lamented the lack of respect the industry showed him. always! i'm disgusted that in a world where jay z has 22 grammys and beyonce has 20 and 53 noms, a true musical genius such as prince only has 7. it just shows that none of this stuff is ever truly about talent.

Ok so
1988 U2 Joshua Tree beat SOTT for Album of the Year. I disagree.

Aretha Franklin and George Micheal beat him for best RB song by duo or group and best song... UGot the Look was the song.

It's kind of a pain to find this because I haven't found a site that list noms and winners. Not easily at least.
Surprise, surprise.

I think it's because of how he treated Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson on the 'We Are the World' sessions... bc think about it... Lionel Richie won for 'Can't Slow Down' for best album over 'Purple Rain'???? Travesty

^ as i said, it's never about quality and true talent. politics plays a huge role in these awards. same with the acting awards. if you don't play the game, you don't get rewarded. it's a shame he was never appreciated by the industry the way he should've been.

Best lists and awards are subjective in most cases (the Billboards, on the other hand, are based entirely on sales figures, if that's your thing). Notice the big gap between The Gold Experience and News? Gee, you think maybe Prince's feud with Warner had anything to do with that 8 year hiatus? Emancipation wasn't nominated, and it's crazy ambitious. To paraphrase Frank Zappa, America rewards mediocrity (case in point, not one nod to Lovesexy). And look, he started winning Grammys again when Musicology came out and he was back to playing ball.

Grammys are a joke...why does anyone give them any credibility?

Ask Hendrix, Sly, Marley, Gaye, Clinton and JB who have been ignored over the years.

It's more of honor for Prince to be in that group.

That was actually his reaction when they simply read his name from the list of best albums. I don't think there's footage of his reaction when U2 won. Here's the link to the video:

Wow, seriously? In that case Prince should have had 500+ grammy awards! Anyway, I did not know that, that's just absurd and all the more reason for me to keep NOT following those BS awards.

The Grammys were extremely middle of the road with an "easy listening" bias in the years before the 2000s, so rarely did anyone that pushed the edge with original and artistic music win. This is still true today, just not as extreme. Prince would have had to be more like Phil Collins, Christopher Cross, and Lionel Ritchie to dominate. Scary thought! If he had been, few if any of us would be on this board.

Yeah, the Grammy's are a joke. I'm a big Paul McCartney fan, and in 2005 he was nominated for Best Album or something like that. It was one of his better albums, but the idea that he was even nominated was a joke. I imagined the reasoning went something like, 'If we nominate McCartney, he'll show up, and more viewers will tune in."

It's kind of ironic. Like I said. I am a HUGE McCartney fan, but it was his nomination that year that turned me off of the Grammys.

'Just cause it's nasty, don't mean it's bad.'

Wow. When they read the nomination for S☮TT, the audience barely applaud him. Compared to the others who were nominated. Scary low appriciation for that album in the crowd that night. eek

Yes, that's what I notice from the list...time and again he was losing to MOR artists. Interesting thread, it was only in recent years that I began watching the Grammy's, as for years they weren't televised in the UK.

U2's speech was so lame...saying Prince was more than a "song and dance man" as a sideways compliment. It was following this when P made the famous statement, "I'm not saying I'm better than anybody else. But you'll be sitting there at the Grammys, and U2 will beat you. And you say to yourself, 'Wait a minute. I can play that kind of music, too. I played La Crosse [Wisconsin] growing up, I know how to do that, you dig? But you will not do 'Housequake.'"

I agree! That comment was so backhanded. Prince did not need validation from the likes of Bono after just producing arguably the decade's best album. And P was spot on - he could do everything they could do, but can't say the same in return. No point in being humble about when it's the god honest truth!

Baby, that was much too fast... 1958-2016

CynicKill

I doubt that was a backhanded compliment.

My take is he felt Prince deserved the award but because the academy had so little respect for him, he didn't.

It's good he lost to U2 though. Any other winner would've been an injustice.

He was definitely snubbed. Looked like that stung cuz he knew he deserved it.

SOTT was Grammy worthy. I liked Josuha Tree but not that much.

as I understand Prince won "7 Grammy's and an Oscar", he should have won some more of those Grammys (looking back),

I think Purple Rain and Sign O' The Times deserved to win best album of the year.
