Life and Times by Draper book

I just re-read this book and it sure reads differently now. I'm sure there will be a ton of new books, but I think I prefer them before the "ending".

For me it was helpful to read about some of his egotistic behavior, questionable business and personal decisions, etc. I know it's common that when someone passes we only speak of the good, but i.m.o. it slows down the grieving process. I find it easier knowing he wasn't perfect and had flaws. For years when I would find a album or performance lackluster I would lurk on here and read how others thought the same. I wouldn't want to see him bashed, but I think it's healthy to realize he was human and wasn't perfect. He wouldn't want to be idolized. (Well, maybe a little!)

I'm attaching some pics of the parts that really got to me. I know we've talked here about the significance of April 21 in the past, but it's weird seeing it in print in a previous book. As is seeing Madonna, Michael and Prince all mentioned and their impending 50th birthdays.

One of the prettiest books about Prince but sadly one of the dullest in terms of reading.

I agree. There is a lot of ass kissing going on -- understandably so -- since his passing.

Prince -- like the rest of us human beings -- was not perfect though. The shit he said/did to musicians that respected him was mind boggling at times. How he could be so great and supportive to some people, and then treat others so poorly was disappointing to learn.

Oh, and if you enjoy what you talked about in your OP, you'll enjoy this: http://princetext.tripod...._1995.html

Also, I had no idea Don Draper was a fan of Prince.

Long, but interesting read. Thanks!

Ha! I had seen this book in a store and I wondered if it was a good book! I regret not buying it now.

It was his brother, Jason Draper.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

This article reminded me of the frustration I had felt at various times as a dedicated Prince fan who just wanted to enjoy his music. We'd argue that though Prince strived to live healthy he was still as self-destructive as many of the other stars who fame and fortune had gone to their head. So many of his financial decisions and creative endeavors were so clearly egotistical, which was his perogative I'd argue, but yet was just not helpful to building the positive image/acceptance of American Blacks which many of us knew was a goal of his. Alas, he was only but human.

.... so I'm not the only one who has thought working with Prince would be like working in a madhouse run by a 6 year old. I have had many jokes about this with a friend who also adores Prince as a musician. I love the man as an artist dearly, but as a person, I gotta tell you, I would have been sorely tempted to either strangle him or take a belt to his backside just on principle. At least once a day.

I love the "I don't need a mother!" quote. Yah, you kinda did, Prince. You kinda did. biggrin

Ironically, though, I have a similar personality to him, though, so I get it. Half the time, I don't even care about how to use money wisely, either. I want what I want when I want it -- it's fortunate that nobody is depending on me for their livelihood, or things would be hairy. I think the closest I came to being somewhat of an Adult is when my mother was ill -- I kind of had to do things differently, or she'd've been on the street. I hated it so much.

But yeah. Prince = 6 year old. Yup.

ANyway HI I AM LURKER.
