That's true. Unlike MJ, he did not become a tabloid target until he passed so the public never got used to seeing him in that context.

Another important point is that even though the tabloids and conspiranoids tried their best, the good people of Minnesota ain't having it.

I will say one thing and I totally stand by this opinion... Whatever happened there was a significant difference in Prince's health between the last time I saw him perform in person in 2014 (I was only a few feet away from the stage in a small club) and his last public appearances this year.
