Colonized Mind

This is my new jam for sure.

I didn't listen to LotusFlower much. Giving it a spin now and CM just really jumped at me and is very relevant to the times.

I read former threads and it's got many interpretations. I could not know what he specifically intended, but my perception digs it.

I like this album. I just never spent a lot of time with it. My music collection is robust and around 2006 I started abusing shuffle.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

actually one of my faves. prince was pretty deep at this point into jw philosophy, conspiracy issues of govt control (chemtrails and the like), and the whole idea of human subjugation or as some would even describe, slavery.

i like that he continued to cut loose, intellectually and spiritually and became even freer in some ways later in his career. one of his most significant albums, message wise imo from later years. but then, they All had messages, so who knows

Why is that bullshit?

I thought it was pretty general. Kids are missing guidance.
Family lives are pretty grim - I can only speak from urban America though. Families are different now, but the kids still need to have people looking out for them. Even fathers in name only.

That kid you upload is going to get sucked up into media manipulation if there is no one there to help sort things out.
Surprise, surprise.

Where did that lack sympathy? I think he was just stating fact. I adopted my daughter. Her mother overdosed and her dad went to prison. I wasn't offended.

Totally.
I think he was reading a lot and maybe quoting from it just to throw the idea out there, to see what stuck. But when it came to most of his songs it was totally his perspective of it.

If you just mostly consumed his releases, didn't really know the behind the Serbs stuff. It's all pretty "tame".

Is there a song that mentions chemtrails specifically? I am blown away at what I missed lyrically with him. Or perhaps didn't miss, just wasn't in a place absorb it.

The lyrics to Box of Chocolates stopped me in my tracks.

Beautiful song, Dreamer. I wasn't listening to a lot of rock at the time. I see It was nominated for a Grammy. I just heard while I was mopping the floor and didnt read the lyrics. Thanks for pointing that out.

I love him so much. I'm really going to miss his lyrics. He's my favorite writer for sure. He is a lot of my favorites.

sure thing. i look forward to more sharing like this about his lyrics..,there was so much there, it probably takes all of us together to catch all the meanings and messages. the dude was deep for sure.

i think what i will miss the most is no more new commentary on the world, or on the experiences he might have had as he got older and thought through more things.

the dancing might have slowed down, but that mind never stopped working....sigh...

From/Return to the Lotus, Boom, Crimson & Clover, Colonized Mind, Wall of Berlin, Dreamer... Lotusflower is one his best post-80s albums. Almost a classic!

There's a version that exists in the imaginary vault of Prince albums inside my head that replaces 4ever with a Prince-vocal version Redhaired Stepchild, and has the version of When I Lay My Hands on You that he played at Montruex, (very much Lotusflower production) instead of $. Fantasy sure, but that fantasy is the dog's bollocks! headbang

And yeah, Colonized Mind is a great song. Lyrically, this belongs to the category of: I might not agree with what some of the religous/whatever aspects of the song, but I'd sure rather listen to zany Prince singing about God and conspiracy theories than singing about love and where the party be.

Hundalasiliah!

I always liked this song too and certainly didn't find any of the lyrics touchy or offensive in any way. Since when it is bad to say that kids with no parents and guidance often turn out messed up?

.

Anyway I never delved into the lyrics that much anyhow. But the Lotusflower album is one of my faovorites he did from the last 10 years.

Agree 100%. Being really special at music doesn't mean you're automatically special in other fields of study.

Right now, I have a CD I made in my car that I listen to while driving. Song 1: "When Will We B Paid" (Prince opened the 2nd show in Atlanta with that song.) Song 2: "Black Sweat (live from Piano and Mic show in Atlanta, and I can still see him performing this song, clapping and stomping his leg during one part of it.) Song 3: "Colonized Mind" and Song 4: "Free Urself" (because I had tweeted him, asking him to make this song available, he retweeted me, and then tweeted about the Free Urself t-shirts, a few hours later he deleted my tweet, and tweeted "Ask and ye shall receive (link to shirts for sale)" and then "BTW (link to Free Urself for sale) : )". Just those 4 songs for now are the only ones I can truly listen to. I haven't really been able to delve into any of his other music, not ready to.

.

"Colonized Mind" is very deep. And I know it's been mentioned above, but the part about "Upload: A child with no father, Download: no respect 4 authority. Upload: A child with no mother, Download: A hard time showing love," gets to me each and every time, growing up in foster homes and group homes, I've seen the evidence of this. I've also experienced the "hard time showing love" and am very guarded. I think, perhaps, it is because of this verse that I gravitated towards this song. Of course, it's not true for every person out there. There are always exceptions, and those exceptions don't understand how others are not where they are and think it's ridiculous. But research has born out those two statements. And I grew up to become a social worker, working with kids at one point that were placed in a residential treatment facility, and I saw the evidence of those two statements on a daily basis.

Love it.
His views aren't shared by everyone but he stands by them.

I don't care but musically this song is an obvious rip off.
small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!
