Funny cool Prince connection tonight!
My parents gave me a ticket to the Nashville Schermerhorn tonight. In the rush of my daily life I really hadn't researched what it was tonight. I knew it was Mahler though. I made it early to the pre symphony lecture. As Giancarlo Guerrero, our conductor for the night, spoke to us and described the control the this Gustav Mahler demanded on his musicians, the staff, how everything is to be played, etc, I was struck... Hmmm it sounds like what I thought Prince to be like. Amazing. Made me further want to explore Mahler. Then over time I suddenly remembered the "Good Love" lyric "Gustav Mahler number 3 is jamming on the box" and thought how cool if I could hear what Prince must have enjoyed in the number 3. Well low and behold I looked down at my program and its the no. 3!!! I'm so excited. I'm sitting here waiting for this fabulous work. And trying to perhaps soak in what Prince might've found bye resting in this work! Just a wonderful evening! Love you Prince. Love you Mahler.

Gustav Mahler No. 3 by the Nashville Symphony May 26, 2016 report
...Riding home from Nashville now...on the interstate.....wow.....WOW.....feelings of such stirring inside me. The first movement blew me away with the orchestrations. The textures especially emphasized by the woodwinds was other worldly and sounded quite other worldly even slightly synthesized seemingly. Very ahead of his time that Mahler, like Prince.
First movement itself clocked in at 35-40 minutes, like sitting through a 9-song Prince album!!!! Heavenly it was. There was a 20minute intermission with that, unusual mid-symphony but the work is not for the light hearted. There is a lot to process here. Everything is there; all textures, all voices. And this is a Prince-ly "damn near" type production at "damn near 2 hours."!!! So worth it and so good I honestly lost track of the time. That's what good music is about. There was a mezzo soprano, angels sung by Nashville Symphony Chorus women vocalists and the Blair School of Music boys choir. I have no idea what Prince might have thought about this work, but again, I was taken aback at the similarities described between the took. What Mahler did didn't take courage, but 'ego,' as the after-lecture Guerrero told back to me when I spoke out with my question at Q and A. Everyone chuckled. I think a similar line of talk would ensure if we were talking about Prince. Anyway, hey.....thank you Prince. A fun pop song "Good Love" in its own funky way way back 25 plus years ago engrained in my mind over and over that Gustav line and now Prince has transported me back to more musical discoveries....1800s.....early 20th. Suddenly the universe in one way with all its sequence of events comes together as one. .....sigh. The last movement, the sixth movement, with its orchestration and moving progression. wow.....WOW. And as i pounded and clapped at the end I noticed I had on my symbol armband, once again blown away at the coincidental connection of the night. So glad I came.
