Did WB have bigger plans for BATMAN LP? If so, What Happened? I busted out Batman Lp today.... I just love this album... The Future , Electric Chair, Lemon Crush (I know people hate that one), Scandalous and Batdance are some of my all time favorite P songs.
When the album came out, I remember the hype being huge and it was selling really well. I remember an article in Billboard saying that Warners was planning at least 4 singles and that the album had legs past Batdance..
But then what happened? Did the hype for the Batman movie just fade out and the album just followed suit? or did Prince piss off Warners again..
or did everyone do what they needed to do but it just didnt set the world on fire like they thought?
I mean, I know it sold 2 million.. but I remember thinking it would sell A LOT more...
Batdance did great.. but then Partyman just kind of fizzled out and nothing really ever re-charged it.
And I guess there were technically 4 singles with Arms of Orion for pop and Scandalous for RnB...
Does anyone know - were there planned singles that never happened? What happened behind the scenes??

It was well promoted in the UK. We got four singles: Batdance, Partyman, The Arms of Orion and The Future over the space of a year. Scandalous was available as an import. The film had come and gone, so I'm not sure what else Warners could have done. Prince must have been itching to move onto Graffiti Bridge, with Thieves in the Temple coming out just two months after The Future. | |

. What I remember is this: . 1. Huge excitement and anticipation when the news broke that Prince would be writing songs for this new and exciting Batman film. . 2. Huge laughter and disappointment when we heard some of those songs in the movie. Everyone was like what the hell are these songs doing in this film? Like putting Chet Atkins songs in a movie about Roman gladiators. Yes, those Prince songs in BATMAN became the punch lines to many comedians' acts. "....that fits as well as those Prince songs in BATMAN!" was a popular line. . Bottom line is this: when the film actually came out and played, everyone loved it. Big hit. But the Prince songs were deemed so incompatible that the album seemed to just disappear. | |

--- Tim Burton who hated that pop songs were attached to his movie. | |

I think "The Future" and "Trust" should have been the singles after "Partyman".It seems like the album's momentum began to stall when "The Arms Of Orion" and "Scandalous" were released as singles. But maybe it didn't matter. The album had already reached double platinum status by that point. | |

I was disappointed with how the director used the songs.Only two songs can be heard clearly in the movie I was like "wtf?!" Prince delivered all these great new songs and the filmmakers didn't even know what to with 'em!

. What!?! Not a dark BATMAN??? . OK, compared to the Heath Ledger Joker and those Chris Nolan Batman films, yeah, the Tim Burton Batman does not appear dark. But that is looking at it from a 2016 perspective. Go back to 1989 and all we had was Adam West and Burt Ward and Cesar Romero and all that goofy WHAM! SPLAT!!! stuff...and Tim Burton's film was a new DARK version of Batman. It was seen as a really dark look at the Dark Knight. And the Prince songs -- these 1980s synth songs -- did not fit. . Watch the darn movie. The albums songs are really conveniently left out of the film. No one involved in the film was happy with what Prince came up with. Aside from "Partyman" were the album songs really front and center? | |

Haha. It was a Batman movie, not a Prince movie. Can you imagine just inserting ANY songs out of nowhere in "The Dark Knight Rises"? Comedy! | |

. Prince delivered tunes that did not fit the film at all. That is why the director had no choice but to not use them. . To this day I still listen to that album and say, "What the hell do these songs have to do with the look, feel, tone, atmosphere of that film?" Gotham City in that film was a decrepit Gothic locale...and Prince gives us modern synths and glossy clean songs. . Yes, you can like the album. I do. But the songs as a soundtrack to a film are a complete failure. Tell me exactly where "Batdance" would fit in that film? | |

Maybe the Prince soundtrack is what brightens the movie and makes it a hell of a lot of fun. I love that movie and I love the soundtrack. Lemon Crush is one of my favorite Prince songs. Also like Trust. Watch out with me... To me when I see the old school yellow Batman Logo on a something it's a Prince something. I enjoyed waiting in line to ride the Batman at 6Flags because they Played The soundtrack. The Batdance video. I loved his Gemini spin. Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick. | |

. Were you around then? Let me tell you, anything that had anything to do with that BATMAN film was a success. You put that BAT symbol on a Frisbee and the darn thing sold five million units. BATMAN beach towels, BATMAN toys...anything BATMAN was successful. Even a BATMAN soundtrack album with out of place funky songs was a success. . Yes, the Prince album was a monetary success. That doesn't mean it was good for the film. If it were, the songs would have been used in the film! Burton used one and kept two or three as background party music. That's all he could do with what Prince presented him. | |

I think it was Prince who had bigger plans for the Batmam LP, that's why there is a Batman movie soundtrack and a Prince Batman movie soundtrack.

There were no such punchlines. Batdance was a huge hit, Partyman was great and there were three to four other songs released betweem The Future, The Arms of Orion, Scandalous and Electric Chair. It was a good year for Prince. | |

He should have put Dance With The devil on the soundtrack.... it was darker and fit the movie fairly well. I agree that most of the songs did not fit the tone of the movie. It's also one of my favorite albums ever regardless. I love it anyway, but I never really connected Batman with Prince's Batman soundtrack... How'm I gonna fill this empty room... | |

The answer is momentum. Partyman just wasn't that big of a hit. | |
