How do we learn to live in a world without Prince?

One day at a time, I guess.

The same way I had to learn to live in a world without my mother.

It will be hard, yes. A friend and fellow fan said (I'm paraphrasing) that the TOTALITY of what we're about to miss hasn't hit us yet. Prince was so multi-faceted because there were so many wonderful things about him, it will take months to fully get over our grief. Like Questlove said at the BBMAs said, there will be things that keep reminding us of him as the months and years roll on.

Grief is the price we pay for loving someone.

And so, we must pay that price now. sad

I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

ANSWER: The exact same way we learned to live in a world without all of the other recording artists that died before Prince. We moved on one day at a time. sad

And we also make a little free time to do some proper bitching about how f*** up the music industry really is with the current young generations of recording artists (and I say "artists" loosely) that are not worthy of the torches that Michael & Prince held and James Brown held before the both of them. lol

Let myself feel whatever the heck I want to feel without constraint on how others may think I should feel. At the same time make an effort to do what needs to be done anyway. Some days have been better than others and I accept that this will take a very long while and accept that for me it will never "heal" and be okay with that. I definitely make an effort not to neglect those around me though, it isn't their fault life is screwed up sometimes, and I continue with the everyday routines of life, I've gone to some events that I've never attended before. Finding new interest.

You answered your own question. The same for me--my Mom passed on several years ago before her time should have been up. The same process you went through you have to do for Prince. There will come a time when his music--his life force--will bring us joy again.

The same way you lived April 22, and April 23, and April 24, and through to May 24, and then June 24, then July 24, etc. etc. Life is going on. You can get in the "how do I go on?" routine, or you can just go on. You went on enough to go to work, paid your rent, and put gas in your car.

.

Grief is temporary, if you want it to be. Remember, the last stage of grief is acceptance. Once you reailze these are the shitty cards on the table, and this is hand we've all be dealt, the better chance you have of just playing it, and moving onto the next table.

.

I lost my mother in 2012. We had a bit of a warning, and knew it was coming. But the absense of her big personality is glaring. This is our world now, my brother and I, without mom. You learn to fill the space with new habits, new ideas, alternate routines. It doesn't replace the departed, it just distracts you for a while.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm just going to talk about him all the time. I think I was happiest
In junior high and high school just totally obsessed with him.

If I could get away with dressing like 80s era Prince, I would. All his eras are cool but damn I wanted to be a revolutionary hippie.

I'm still real sad though. Trying to have some fun. I always wondered how Tricky and Mary Sharon survived.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I'm finding it hard. Not in terms of carrying on with my life.I have a family to look after. It's my quiet moments, my me time at night that hurts. That's my Prince time, listening to his new album or watching clips and stuff, or reading about his antics. Noing there will be nothing brand new to happen in princes world upsets me.

You can think about him still being alive but if you post a thread about it, it will be locked and then suddenly and mysteriously dissappear all together. Hmm, weird.... I'm seeing some parallels here...

Even Jesus mourned his friend. You know the one HE could raise from the dead. Give a mere mortal a break.

That sort of reminds me of some churches that tell their members who've had someone pass to not mourn but rejoince, and go on to have very upbeat services. But that doesn't help the person who lost someone close to them mourn.

The bible did say "rejoice with those that rejoice, and mourn with those that mourn"

Yeah, I always had an issue with the rejoicing part when someone dies. Psalms said "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints". I get the meanings. I was raised in church, quite strictly. But Solomon also said, "there's a time to mourn, and a time to rejoice" (harking back to what you typed). This is the time to mourn and grieve. Joy comes in the morning (perhaps a reference of Prince's own "May u live 2 see the dawn" and then "welcome 2 the dawn").

All that shuckin' and jivin' in the aisles doesn't fill the void of going home, and seeing a pair of shoes that will no longer be worn by their owners, or a shirt that still smells like them, or a brush with their hair still in it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

So well said. You are referencing Solomon's wise words in Ecclesiastes 3, which was also made into a famous rock song by The Byrds--"Turn! Turn! Turn!." Eccl. 3:

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
