I wish Prince would have had a chance to enjoy his elder statesman status more

One thing I hoped for Prince as he got up there in age and propelled further and further into the "legend" stratosphere I was hoping for several years of Prince as an elder statesman. I'm a charts guy, I would have loved to seen him have a Top 40 hit that would blow these current nobodies on the chart out the window. But, facing facts, the odds of an almost 60 year old getting heavy rotation with DJ Snake and the Chaninsmokers was fairly small. So my wish was to have seen him where Clapton and Dylan are now...releasing an album every couple of years and then maybe releasing a "critic's fave" out of the blue that got some Grammy buzz. I would have paid tons to see an all acoustic tour, similar to the piano and mic concept but Prince sitting on a stool with a guitar for two hours would have been awesome. Just sad that Prince had earned this and didn't truly get a chance to do it. (Hell, maybe that is the complete opposite of what Prince wanted, just a selfish wish on my part).

i don't think it was the opposite of what he wanted. he was kind of already doing it. mentoring many young mucisicians. he said on some interview "its not even about me anymore" so he was all into shaping the next gen of talent. and he seemed to be happy about the p and m tour...and that new guitar that he so wanted to play..who knows..after the p and m he might have done some studio stuff and then set off on an acoustic tour.

yes, deserved to enjoy the next phases of his career, whatever they were going to bw. and he was robbed for sure.

I was just thinking how weird it is we are losing people who are younger than the baby boomers music generation- Clapton, Tyler, Dylan, Wonder etc... All those folks are still up and kicking.

I read an article a few months ago that gen x basically has a shorter life span than boomers due to a variety of things. Most especially alcohol and drug (prescription or otherwise).

It's really sad. I guess I was still hoping for that revolution I felt Prince was driving. Just didn't happen. I'll have to deal with it and hope things are better in the next life.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Prince's acoustical skills and talent blew me away. I would of loved to see more. I can't imagine how many new styles he would of continued to introduce. The man was a phenom.

I always thought it was cool when Clapton had that mini-resurgence in the early 1990s...he did that "Unplugged" and then had a few hits and the younger generation had a chance to see this rock legend in a different light. Teenagers who probably didn't know much about Cream or his guitar prowess got to hear his songs alongside Vanilla Ice and Color Me Badd. But it's a different time; in the 90s you had your Bonnie Raitts and 40 and 50 year old acts who could break through on radio; there is no one like that now that radio will play. Prince had a lot of "comebacks" even if he never went anywhere, 2004 being the most recent huge rediscovery. If life is a play, the thing that sucks is that there seems to be an act missing. Prince had another public comeback in him, maybe a couple of more. He didn't need them, he could have retired to an island and never recorded another thing and his legend status was already firmly established. He was accepting "life time" achievement awards in the 1990s when he was still under 40 so he didn't need to do anything. But the man was just too talented not to be constantly rediscovered.

All good things they say never last...
