'Purple Rain' was not Prince's only hit single

Jesus fucking christ, is anyone else annoyed at the endless cliche tributes of "Purple Rain"? I get that it's an anthemic song and a lot of people love it and associate it with Prince, but the man had another 18 fucking songs hit the top 10 in the US and several more in the UK as well as famous album tracks and b-sides/top 40s. I knew Madonna would perform Purple Rain (which Prince tribute lately DOESNT include that song) but I wish more songs from Prince's catalogue would be performed. Props to D'angelo for SISIA and Beyonce for The Beautiful Ones. I really hope BET comes through with a performance Prince himself would love and show off his multi-faceted musical personality. Do we really need to hear everyone's take on 'Purple Rain' as if it was the only hit in his career? Apologies if this has been addressed before, there's been a million threads in the past 4 weeks to skim through

I think the next tribute should feature "Thieves In The Temple Tonight."

It appears that "Purple Rain" is his signature song that has resonated more than the others. Re-
member that this is the Org, where some of us have the extended version of "Girl" or "She's Al-
ways In My Hair," or "Let's Go Crazy", for example. So yeah, we're deeper into Prince's catalog
than most.

But I hear ya! I don't like "Purple Rain" and always thought it was cheezy and maudlin as fuck.

Yeah what you're saying is true. I mean I don't expect anyone to perform "Mountains" or "Erotic City" at a tribute, but at least Prince's other big hits. 1999, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Adore.. hell, BET's tribute to Prince when he was living was better than last night's posthumous tribute.

I love it too but Purple Rain isn't even his biggest hit. It would be nice for some other songs to take the spotlight now.

In fact PR is in my alltime P top 10 but i'm getting sick of it lately lol.

It was the song the masses associate with him the most. He’s probably sung Purple Rain in concert more times than he’s song any other song but I could be wrong about that. Personally, there are many, many Prince songs I’d rather hear but Purple Rain was definitely his “signature” song.

Have to admit, I got bored of all the Purple Rain tributes, although it was nice at least that people bothered.

I saw the band Gov't Mule recently and their tribute was much more subtle - They came on to a brief jam under purple spotlights and then in the first song the guitar player featured an excerpt of the vocal melody to Sign o' the Times in his guitar solo. Was brief but was a nice touch and at least showed that they were marking Prince's passing.

Oh and I caught a clip on Youtube of the British band The Bluetones playing I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man after Prince's passing. Not sure if they ever played it before or whether it was a specific tribute, but kudos to them anyway.
This is not an exit

I figured a tribute would also highlight something new about the tributee, as oppose to regurgitating the same ole same ole.

I think "Purple Rain" is easier to pull off live by an artist who isn't deep into Prince's catalog than
even those other popular tunes you mentioned. "When Doves Cry," or "Let's Go Crazy" may be
a bit too quirky to pull off by someone who isn't a great musican. "Adore" is easy to perform be-
cause it's straight forward, just like "PR." Ballads and piano driven tunes are just easier to play!

Purple Rain is the price all hardcore fans have to pay for sharing Prince the whole world.

One of his song so touched the world it became synonymous with what he represents, along with the colour purple.

Not only that: Purple Rain was always multi-generational. Back in the day, you could listen to it with your mother, you could listen to it with your father, you could even listen to it with your grandmother. In a way you couldn't do with When Doves Cry, for instance.

So we're stuck, it's his "My Way", his "Love Me Tender", his "Satisfaction" -- the masses have decided and you have no say. Just think of Purple Rain as a gateway drug.

Manuela has confirmed that Prince didn't like people singing "Purple Rain" - we all figured that out after the Trey Songz debacle, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

...and as it should be. "Purple Rain" is one of the greatest songs in history. Nothing wrong with it being celebrated in association with Prince's legacy. And for the exact reasons stated above. If anything, I think us as "deeper" fans need to get over ouselves enough to allow those who don't have the 12" dance mix of "Purple & Gold" to connect with the man and his music from a more topical standpoint...

At this point, I could live out the rest of my life and never hear Purple Rain again, and that would be fine. It's become associated with losing him to me now.

I wanted Madonna to sing "Controversy" biggrin That's a song that she could really relate to

but let's be real...."Purple Rain" is Prince's signature song. It's the one Prince song that the mainstream remembers most vividly. That actually annoys me because it's not even one of my personal Top 10 Prince songs, lol.

I think if she had sung Controversy, it would had been 100% better. Really, any of his more upbeat songs that put more focus on performance than vocals would have been better, and a lot less somber.

If you will, so will I

The song is practically about having a big, communal, arms-waving-in-the-air emotional experience. It's a no-brainer as a tribute for the dinner crowd.

That said, I think tributes like this are kind of dumb, and only really serve the person performing.

I wonder why nobody ever does "Diamonds and Pearls"? That would seem like the ideal song for a tribute performance. It's got a positive message and it's well-known by the masses. It would be easy to do a sing-along chorus at the end ("everybody, let's sing it together!")

According to Miguel. I don't remember Prince ever confirming that little tale.
