I busted out Batman Lp today.... I just love this album... The Future , Electric Chair, Lemon Crush (I know people hate that one), Scandalous and Batdance are some of my all time favorite P songs.
When the album came out, I remember the hype being huge and it was selling really well. I remember an article in Billboard saying that Warners was planning at least 4 singles and that the album had legs past Batdance..
But then what happened? Did the hype for the Batman movie just fade out and the album just followed suit?
or did Prince piss off Warners again..
or did everyone do what they needed to do but it just didnt set the world on fire like they thought?
I mean, I know it sold 2 million.. but I remember thinking it would sell A LOT more...
Batdance did great.. but then Partyman just kind of fizzled out and nothing really ever re-charged it.
And I guess there were technically 4 singles with Arms of Orion for pop and Scandalous for RnB...
Does anyone know - were there planned singles that never happened?
What happened behind the scenes??
Lemon Crush was one of my favs from the album. Maybe I'm a weirdo...but I loved that song as well as Vickie Waiting. Party Man...not so much. Trust....loved it!
I also remember right after Scandalous was released.....there came that Scandalous Love Suite remix of a bunch of his songs that the radio stations started jamming in Chitown
2. Yes, those Prince songs in BATMAN became the punch lines to many comedians' acts. "....that fits as well as those Prince songs in BATMAN!" was a popular line.
.
As others have stated: Name ONE, just ONE, comedian who used that???
.
Are you serious? You think I can remember every single comedian I saw on HBO Young Comedians, Def Jam Comedy Hour, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Arsenio, and a billion other shows? Just because I can't remember some unknown comics I saw on HBO at three in the morning means it didn't happen??? Hey do you remember who won the 1970 Kentucky Derby? No, you don't. Uhh, according to your silly rules I guess that means it didn't happen.
.
Face it, those songs that Prince came up with for a film about Batman were the brunt of many a joke.

Prince delivered all these great new songs and the filmmakers didn't even know what to with 'em!
.
Prince delivered tunes that did not fit the film at all. That is why the director had no choice but to not use them.
.
To this day I still listen to that album and say, "What the hell do these songs have to do with the look, feel, tone, atmosphere of that film?" Gotham City in that film was a decrepit Gothic locale...and Prince gives us modern synths and glossy clean songs.
.
Yes, you can like the album. I do. But the songs as a soundtrack to a film are a complete failure. Tell me exactly where "Batdance" would fit in that film?
I think those songs were perfect for the movie."The Future" certainly has a dark, pulsing sound that reflects the mood/vibe of Gotham City."Electric Chair" could have been The Joker's theme song.An instrumental version of "Batdance" (the first, mostly instrumental part) could have been used during action scenes. The director was just too stupid to find a way to use the music more effectively.
I do think that Batman would be a stronger album if it carried the grim tone set by The Future and Electric Chair throughout. Instead it's a little too bouncy and silly. It rings more Caesar Romero than Jack Nicholson.
I'm somewhat perplexed by this thread because the Batman album had 5 officially released singles and went to Number 1 in the US and the UK... what 'bigger plans' could Warner Bros. have had in mind?!
It was well promoted in the UK. We got four singles: Batdance, Partyman, The Arms of Orion and The Future over the space of a year. Scandalous was available as an import. The film had come and gone, so I'm not sure what else Warners could have done. Prince must have been itching to move onto Graffiti Bridge, with Thieves in the Temple coming out just two months after The Future.
1. Huge excitement and anticipation when the news broke that Prince would be writing songs for this new and exciting Batman film.
.
2. Huge laughter and disappointment when we heard some of those songs in the movie. Everyone was like what the hell are these songs doing in this film? Like putting Chet Atkins songs in a movie about Roman gladiators. Yes, those Prince songs in BATMAN became the punch lines to many comedians' acts. "....that fits as well as those Prince songs in BATMAN!" was a popular line.
.
Bottom line is this: when the film actually came out and played, everyone loved it. Big hit. But the Prince songs were deemed so incompatible that the album seemed to just disappear.
None of this is true!!! What's the point of making things up?
That guy's always trolling this board with complete nonsense, can't believe more people don't call him out on it.
The songs were hardly in the movie at all and were really unneccessary. the album did sell well and gave Prince renewed clout after the flop of Lovesexy. I recall it sold a couple million which would make it his best selling album since around the world in a day. His sales weren't that good even though everyone knew he was the "artist of the decade". Kurt Loder claimed that the Batman album was a color by numbers funk album but he lauded the fact that Prince got some well deserved sales of SOMETHING! I personally don't think it's a bad album at all, it has some songs that do sound like throwaways though and some of the lyrics sound like they really weren't that well thought out. Word was that Prince created the entire album in a week. more likely, he had some tunes lying around and refurbished them. Some of the topics are pretty deep and futuristic though and the videos for batdance and partyman are among his best.
also, the real soundtrack by Danny Elfman was better than Prince's. However, one thing that Prince keyed in on perfectly was the duality of batman/joker because that is exactly who he was in so many ways, an embodiment of polar opposites, so in that way, he was a natural fit and understood exactly what the movie was about. I really do think the sales mainly came from hype over the movie, it was huge.

You mean you don't remember ALL the comedians, who for the first time in recorded history, all did the same bit, "that fits about as well as those Prince songs in Batman!"
Richard Pryor did a variation on it in his bit about sticking dildos into a farm animal.
Steve Martin also did a very popular bit with the exact same punchline but it was a joke about sticking the wrong key in the lock.
Then, of course, Gallagher did the same punchline but it was more of his physical humor with him shoving his sledgehammer into a watermelon.
There was also many late-night comedians who used the same punchline but they were too ribald to print here.
Yeah, it is amazing more people don't call him on it. He trolls over and over and over. He should be booted off here for trolling.
PARTYMAN was a hit in the US, it didn't do great on radio, but he sold an excess of 500.000 ex in the US. But yeah, it was a minor hit elsewhere.
Then ARMS OF ORION was released, without a video clip. That didn't help the single to be a hit...SCANDALOUS was a flop, and THE FUTURE could have done better with a videoclip too. i don't understand why they didn't make one at least with footage from the movie...Surely a legal issue.
The clip of SCANDALOUS cost almost nothing...Something tells me that WB/Prince didn't have money anymore to finance videoclips, or they were prevented by legal issues.
Prince also lost interest in the album when he got aware that he couldn't use the songs like he wanted to, again because of right issues. That's why the songs are not in his greatest hits.

Looks like Dust Commander won the 1970 Kentucky Derby. I am now waiting to hear the name of these comedians.
I was disappointed with how the director used the songs.Only two songs can be heard clearly in the movie I was like "wtf?!" Prince delivered all these great new songs and the filmmakers didn't even know what to with 'em!
Haha. It was a Batman movie, not a Prince movie. Can you imagine just inserting ANY songs out of nowhere in "The Dark Knight Rises"? Comedy!
Whether it was one song or a hundred, the songs were out of place. I keep the record separate from the movie.
That's where we disagree.I think Prince's songs were a perfect for for the movie, but the filmmakers were too dumb to find a way to use his songs effectively. It's not as if Prince just submitted a normal "Prince album" to them.He submitted songs that were specially written for the movie ("Vicki Waiting",for example)...songs that were written from the point of view of the characters in the film.

anyway, the way it went down was, Prince sold a couple million albums, got enough clout to make another movie and he blew it with Graffiti Bridge. He was the "artist of the decade" (bears repeating) but sales from his albums had declined starting with ATWIAD. Parade and sott didn't sell that well and I recall reading the Lovesexy didn't even go gold. Many stores wouldn't even stock the album. Odd thing though, just as revisionist fans do now, I recall just about every album he came out with, some critic said "Prince is finally back!". People said it for Parade, they said it for Diamonds and Pearls, they said it for The Gold Experience and for Lovesexy. If you were a true Prince fan, you didn't pay that much attention to those reviews, you just listened to the music.

Actually all Prince albums sold well in the 80's, but his sales were better overseas.
For ex: PARADE sold over 4 million albums worldwide but only 1.3M in the U.S.
Lovesexy went GOLD in the U.S. selling over 750,000 but worldwide it sold over 2 million.
Everyone of his albums in the 80's went multiplatinum.
There are workprints of the film where some songs (including Scandelous) were used in a more featured manner. I really don't know what happened, but it was cool.

Bad example, Vicki Waiting was originally called Anna Waiting and was an existing song which was tweaked to fit the Batman movie.

Sheeyit... Batman was huge. A lot of people I knew at the time had only one Prince album, and it was Batman. Even as a hardcore fan, I was a little bewildered that people liked it that much...
PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

Good catch. I always imagine it as a British release as William Orbit was born in England. I was working in a record shop when it was released and we used to play and sell loads of them, so in my mind it felt like a regular release.
