What if "Purple Rain" never happened.... I know. It's almost impossible to imagine but what if the whole juggernaut that was the "Purple Rain" album, movie and era never happened? What do you think Prince's signature song would be? What would his place in music history be? "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

Whatever album followed 1999 would still have been a hit, maybe not as big as PR due to the film but a huge hit regardless. His star was simply on the rise. |

Little Red Corvette & 1999 wouldn't be bad - 'one hit wonder' tunes to have..

I remember reviewers saying "Purple Rain wasn't even his best album" some critics loved 1999 or Dirty Mind more. As good as Purple Rain was, I'd have to say 1999 was better. Prince probably would have exploded with whatever followed up 1999 because the whole business was in an upswing and also, anytime there has been an Elvis, there had to be a jerry lee lewis, when the beatles came along, the rolling stones weren't far behind. Michael had his triumph and he ushered in the era of the mega-million selling albums. To tell the truth, i think Michael had a lot to do with record sales in general and I couldn't see Prince or Bruce selling like that without the huge sales of thriller. of course, prince would have still put out brilliant music and bruce would have too and each would have been successful but I believe Michael created a fresh interest in pop stars and what they could be and variations on what Michael was.

I don't think it was his best although I flucuate on what is his best. I think 1999, SOTT and Dirty Mind are brillant. But I also like musicology, D&P and 3121. So who am I to judge. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed
Thank You Prince | |

that's right, so many great ones to choose from. I'm looking at it as how people saw it at the time. a guy with only a few hits and five previous albums. Personally, even at that time, i thought 1999 was better, i still do.
