To keep it simple, stick to these 2 rules.
1. Songs recorded in the studio that were officially released in any format.
2. Nothing from Newpower Soul, Exodus, or Gold Nigga. (because you could fill all 17 on those 3 records alone.)

H
ere's are my 17:
FunkNRoll (both versions are straight up pooptoast)
Jughead
The Flow
Right The Wrong

Courtin' Time

Animal Kingdom
Everyday Is A Winding Road
Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic (Worst remix of all time)
1999: The New Master (I stand corrected. Worst remix of all time)
Wedding Feast
Gold
Graffiti Bridge
Aintturninround

Peace
Hypnoparadise
New Power Generation (Pt. II)
Tell Me How U Wanna B Done

P.S. Worst album of all-time is a tie between "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" and "20Ten."
P.P.S. The thing I want most from the vault are all of the songs that Tony M. and other various "rappers" ruined -- without Tony M. and said "rappers" raps.

Both versions of Funknroll kick ass!

Gold is a 90's classic

Tell me how u wanna be done is good as well

his version of everyday is a winding road is the only version i like

animal kingdom has always been a secret pleasure of mine

Change it one more time..

RJOrion

im seeing "The Flow" on alot of these worst song lists...if its because of the infamous Tony M.'s annoying mumblings, i can understand that...but im sorry, that beat was ferocious...and for that reason alone, i cant corroborate the hate...same with Jughead to a lesser degree... in spite of Tony M's cornball bars, that NPG era composed some serious soul & funk tracks ...

Arrogance

The Flow

2nd half of The Continental

Love 2 The 9's

Daddy Pop

Gett Off

And God Created Woman

etc.

Most over age 30 don't agree with that statement. Back in the 80s, Prince was Prince. People tried to be like him. When he began trying to be like others -- is when you couldn't listen to an album all the way through any longer. For his first ten records, fans from that time period were lucky. They didn't need to use the skip button, or the fast forward button on their Walkman. Fast forward to his later years (the last 20) and there were entire segments of records that were unplayable thanks to whatever the hell was going on between Prince and Larry/Joshua. That also coincides with P no longer being with WB. Even the two records with WB (PE/AOA) are almost entirely unlistenable.

Temptation, Rave, Cindy C., Lemon Crush, Batdance, guitar, and Loose are all good to excellent tracks IMO. Can't argue with the rest of your list though.

What would make this really challenging is narrowing the criteria to only songs recorded during the 1980s. If that were the case I'd go with:

Gotta Broken Heart Again
Sexuality
Ronnie Talk To Russia
Annie Christian
God
Hello
Girl
Love Or Money
Do U Lie
It
Dead On It
Escape
Positivity
200 Balloons
The Arms Of Orion
Lemon Crush
I Love U In Me

Look how many good songs are in there. It was tough to fill that out.

I really like the bolded songs. Shy was , at the time , considered to be one of the best songs on TGE, but to each his own.

I´m one of the few people on the org who unapologetically likes Lion of Judah. I think if this was recorded and released in the 80s, or if it were an outtake or b-side from the 80s, people would love it and go nuts over it. The music is pretty good, it´s a solid rocker that does not sound as sterile and clean as most of his newer rock songs. The only thing I dislike about it is the chorus...that biblical allegory does nothing for me and reminds me too much of some reggae song. Not the whole song but just that Lion of Judah reference.

Could have been such a strong song if the chorus were different.

What do you dislike about it?

Just curious.

I've went back n' forth with Planet Earth for years. I used to be a big supporter of it, way over Musicology which I was not hap almost angry at Prince's overt religious pontificating from 2001 onward. "God" vs something like "Avalanche" or "1+1+1=3" is night and day for me. I became resentful of his doctrine entering his songs in such a bold way. (I still can't really listen to The Rainbow Children, although I did give a full go last week.) "Lion of Judah" is just ....one of those songs.

.

Planet Earth is enjoyable to exactly the halfway point. The title track, Guitar, Somewhere Here On Earth, The One You Wanna See, and Future Baby Mama are all good and have held up surprisingly well. The One You Wanna See was proof that he and Wendy and Lisa could still create their classic collaborative sound - it would fit right alongside tracks like Teacher Teacher and Wonderful Ass on an album of Prince with W&L tracks.

The second half is of the album is an amazing contrast – some of the worst stuff he ever released. Chelsea Rodgers the only exception as it is a decent groove an arrangement but just half-baked as far as a song concept.

I just wish he would have performed it live at some point. Never hearing a live version, you don't quite make the connection with the song that you would have otherwise.

Because there's something about Arms of Orion that caused me and many others to pause and wonder whether Prince might just be losing it. It was more than a weak song. It was the first time I felt truly disappointed, even embarrassed, by something Prince had put out there. It pissed me off when it was released as a single and Warners made those crap limited edition CD singles. By the time I got to Diamonds and Pearls my serious collecting days were over. And by the time I heard the song Diamonds and Pearls the damage had been done.

But would you agree that Arms of Orion is a better song than D&P?

Arms of Orion is so bad that I haven't sat down and listened to it properly since 1989. It's on permanent skip. In fact, it doesn't exist on my computer (my Batman folder contains 8 tracks) or even in my home. The copies I bought are all in another country. Hopefully, they've been destroyed.

But, you know, I'm 27 years older now. Perhaps if I listened to it today, I'd find that my view has softened. I might go and listen to it on YouTube or something. Might. The thing is, if I admit it's not that bad, there's no way I'll be able to look my 19 year old self in the eye when time travel is invented.

I am surprised that some people are putting Strollin' on their lists! I love, love, love that song! One of my favorites. I think it's a real treat. I also love "Courtin Time." Surprised some people are putting "Gold" on the lists as well. I like it, have to be in the mood for it. Same thing with "Grafitti Bridge." (Meaning I have to be in the mood for it). Last time I heard GB was when the current.org was playing the Prince marathon after he passed. I thought the audio of it sounded great. And somebody mentioned "Chocolate Box"? That song amuses me, and makes me giggle. lol That Prince!

Just as I find it interesting to see what Prince songs are fan favorites, I find it interesting to discover what songs don't really sit well with them. In no way am I dissing Prince, but here are my least favorites, or songs that I would just not add to my playlist. Was Gonna include Jughead but didn't because that's more of a Tony M song anyway. wink

1. Annie Christian

2. Dolphin (I could never get into this one)

3. The Future (Does anyone agreew with this one? I would always skip this one. I even liked Batdance, Lemon Crush, and Arms of Orion better. eek)

4. Get Yo Groove On

5. Damned If Eye Do

6. Muse 2 the Pharaoh

7. Fascination

8. Soul Sanctuary

9. Interactive (I'll have to listen to it again. I remember it being repetitive.)

10. Mellow

11. Golden Parachute

12. My Computer (this song always felt like filler to me. And I like Kate Bush a lot! Just wasn't feelin' it.)

13. Saviour

14. Positivity (I feel bad for including this one. But couldn't really get into it.)

14. Baby, I'm A Star (least favorite song from PR.)

16. Journey 2 the Center of Your Heart

17. America

I listen to Prince's worst songs. Because they are better than some peoples best songs. I still love them. I only skip them on Cd if I'm not in the mood. Like if I'm not in the mood to hear hip hop rn I'll skip jughead. But I normally love it

Except Lemon Crush. I always skip that. It's still better than other people's work, but I don't listen to those peoples work.
No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

sad

I never realized what a lonely boat I'm in, reveling in the lush melodicism and wistful lyrics of Prince and Sheena Easton's so often maligned collaboration.

The only off-putting element for me was Easton's vocal approach. I always wondered what the song would've sounded like with a more soulful co-vocal. But I got used to it eventually.

Rolling Stone called it a song only an Academy Awards nomination committee could love, or something to that effect, upon the album's initial release.

If I'm being as objective as possible, the biggest knock against the song is that it almost sounds generic enough to have been issued by any number of less-distinctive, MOR- or AC-type artists. (I say "almost" because I still think the song retains Prince's identity, particularly in the instrumental passage that concludes the song - my personal favorite part).

That being said, maybe one's appreciation of the song is strongly related that individual's tolerance for "generic," ultra-slick, AC balladry.
