Well I don't have any kids, but I'll tell you what my mom did... apparently she played a lot of the 1999 album for me as a toddler (around 2), skipping the REALLY racy stuff like Lady Cab Driver and the end of Automatic. She said I would stop playing with my toys and sit down and listen to Prince whenever she played it lol

She sort of continued that throughout my childhood, I didn't hear things like "Head" or "Sister" until I was around 10 or so. My mom was always very open and honest with me about the world. I had the "birds and bees" talk around 6, she wanted me to be prepared and know what was inappropriate. She wanted me to always be honest and not lose my voice.

I was really into D&P,when I was 8-9. Mom let me have her cassette of it and bought me the D&P video collection for Christmas, I wore that thing out lol. I wrote Prince a fan letter and everything as kid(and got a venue poster on my 10th birthday from Paisley! Mom had to sign for it and everything lol).

After I was 10, my mom bought me the Hits video collection and The Hits 1 and 2, along with a CD player, and the rest was history. I would use my allowance money to buy Prince CD's/VHS/DVD's, starting from For You. When I was 13/14 I started getting into the online communities and everything on my own.

The thing is, there's so much of the last decade or so of material that is "clean" you shouldn't have a problem finding appropriate songs to play, and you can let your child make their own musical decisions as they mature and grow.

Thank you for all the stories. This made me think that someone should write a brochure or booklet for the children of Prince fans, here's a little draft...

So Daddy/Mommy is a HUGE Prince Fan

A guide to make the most of the situation

Being the child of a Prince fanatic does not have to be unpleasant. Sure, some of the songs you'll have to hear over and over can be annoying, especially the ones with screams, endless noodling, extra-long guitar solos, Tony M. or JW doctrine. But you do have at your disposal a powerful way of influencing your Prince-crazed dad or mom, or even a Paisley-mad uncle or aunt. Cheer up!

Chapter 1: How to get what you want

In the hours before you make that request for a new bike, those expensive sneakers or perhaps mom's car keys, pretend to accidentally make Prince references like "I was playing outside near the five and dime" and watch mama/papa's eyes light up as they ask "Was your boss Mr. Magee?"

Pick a Prince song and say it's your favorite. Don't like Prince's voice? Pick an instrumental piece like Venus de Milo or anything on NEWS. Sit comfortably as your Prince obsessed parent goes through all the shelves to find the CD or LP -- be prepared as they'll insist on playing other tunes they feel are just as good. Whatever you do, do not cringe!

Before you make your request, bring up a related aspect in Prince's life. Want a new bike? Find that clip of him riding his bike in Minneapolis and make sure to discuss it. A drawing of Prince on his bike might be a nice touch -- leave it on the diner table. For new sneakers, it's even easier, Prince is famous for his footwear and your obsessed parent will want to discuss everything from high heels, platform shoes to sneakers with little lights in them.

lol lol I'm showing this to my daughter. She's been crack jokes left and right about growing up in a house listening to Prince.

Just came from the zoo where one of the 4D movies was Happy Feet. Princes Song of the Heart was VERY prominate in the short movie. When we went outside, the song was playing and there were 3 girls, about 10 yrs old, dancing to it. One girl yelled "come on everyone lets get groovy!!" Nice to see
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I'm from The Netherlands, so my 7 Year old son doesn't really understand the lyrics. I play everything and his favorit tune is "Shut up allready"..... Which we all know as Housequake.

That's also one of my daughter's favourite! biggrin We are a French speaking household and even though she is perfectly bilingual, some lyrics are still a mystery to her, and that's perfectly fine by me! wink

It's good to know our kids appreciate good music!!

And also completely by themselves, without the slightest influence from their parents. wink
