I have conflicted feelings about this song, along with the first verse of The Holy River (that I posted above). In the case of the Love We Make, all of these statements are made to preface: "Put down the needle; put down the spoon."

The song starts with an assertion that "the time has come to whip the dogs that steal, beg or borrow from a table God set for his son." Is that a statement, in part, targeted at addicts because by ruining their bodies, they are displeasing God and ruining a gift from God?

Similarly, in The Holy River he discusses addiction/depression battles, followed by "then it hits you like a brick on the wall" and a transition to belief in Jesus being the solution/cure.

Not trying to be overly judgmental tying it all together, but I'd argue that Prince had a dangerous and naive belief that all problems of this nature could be solved if you just "believed harder" in God.

I kind of agree on the point that believing that he tended to cleave to the idea that everything will be resolved if you just believe harder in God, and that this could be a dangerous wager for some people (though I'd acknowledge that it could also be a source of strength for others).

Re: The Love We Make, though, I didn't necessarily interpret the whole song as being directly about addiction, though that comes up in those later verses. I took "the time has come" to be a common, perhaps even generic, statement from someone with an end times eschatology, with the repentence of sinners without due gratitude for what's on the "table God set for His Son" being part of preparation for that. I take it that would be the frame of reference for every issue, particularly serious, 'life and death' issues, of such a believer - almost like what all sermons would start with or come back to. Of course, comes with its own issues, or perhaps meets the issue of a judgemental disposition along the way; but it still seems to slightly evade the rather harsh judgemental aura it has if we interpret the first verse as a direct comment on addiction.

Yes, on balance, I agree with your interpretation. It would seem like a somewhat cruel dedication to J.Melvoin if you took it the other way whereas the whole song is in reference to drug use and condemnation of users.

The lyrical transition in the song takes place between "all the believers will cleanse and purify themselves" and "put down the needle, put down the spoon".

I believe that the placement of those verses together is such that the first part, while referencing spiritual cleansing generally, could also be interpreted to mean those who believe will purify themselves by having the assistance of God in being able to put down the needle and spoon. I agree wtih you that this could be a dangerous wager for some, while a source of strenght to others.

Well, I am an atheist and I think humans created God to survive and derive courage and support from. So, yes, you can say it that way.

I am an admirer of this phrase by Prince but due to some circumstances, I stopped listening to Prince for almost a year. I then went back to Prince, my healer, this April. The first song I listened to was Sometimes It Snows in April, and on the 17th day of this musical healing process, I slept with these last words from him and then woke up to the news of Prince's death. You can imagine my grief when I read here that at the last Atlanta show, he had asked: 'Do I have a friend tonight?' The man who was my strength in the most painful, lonely time of my life was himself in so much pain. It seemed like that was a sign from him: That the only love there is, is the love we make.

Although i love the song, you might be right, it's a little naive; but perhaps, that's the point of view all those who believe there is a God above hold.
