Cologne, Germany 2011. I don't know what happened, but from the footage I've seen he wasn't feeling it at all.
Yes it was the worst show ever. The Sound in the Lanxess arena was a desaster. Prince fucked it up completely, because he came in LATE for soundcheck and wanted to change everything the last minute, but that took too long. He got angry about the sound and left the show earlier. The press tore him into pieces the next day and he never played Germany afterwards again. Only Berlin but that was cancelled because of small ticket sales.
Yes, I was there...and it was the worst Prince Show I ever saw (live or from other sources). The Arena in Cologne is a mess - soundwise. It is difficult to master, and (as I was told / had read afterwards) they tried with their own sound engineer, which is a bad idea to start with for this location. Prince complained about the sound quality even during the concert. (They made also a loooong break after the first song, trying to fix things - but in vain). I made myself a promise to never go to that place again.
And yes, oh yes, the expensive Berlin event. I made myself a birthday present, and bought one of these (overpriced) tickets. I checked the day before online, and it looked still OK. Then I drove directly from Work about 100miles (160km) to find the site empty. (=No notice visible on the site). What a waste of time, and the last chance (as I know now) to see him live for me. ...Well, I would easily pay 10x the ticket price now for a last chance...so I do not regret that I at least tried it back then. |

I think that was a closed/weird show. Only certain people could go? I can't remember exactly but I live in East Texas and I was so mad I couldn't go. The last time he was in Texas before that was in 2006 with Tamar on her tour(I wasn't going to that) and 2004 on the Musicology tour. He was never down here when I was old enough or had the money to go.
I was at that show and it was no easy feat. You had to have a samsung phone, complete a scavenger hunt, be one of the first 150 people in line to pick up your wristbands for the show after youre done and be one of the first 300 people with a wristband at the venue. Luckily I was tipped off by one of the samsung employees a bit early so I was one of the first to do the scavenger hunt, but it was still about 8 collective hours of waiting in lines. Well worth it though to see Prince with Tribe Called Quest opening. Easily the best show I've ever been to in my life and by far the best Prince show I've seen. 300 people in the audience and a 3+ hour set. "Don't make me hurt you Austin. You know how many hits I got?" That line will echo in my brain forever.
So you just gonna throw out the fact that you not only saw my favorite artist who has now passed, but my favorite(of 2 faves) hip hop group of all time with another deceased member?!?!?!?!?

I was at the Jazz festival in Montreal in 2001? where he played jazz for the first hour! People were actually booing it was so lifeless (and expensive). The only recognizable song was Dorothy Parker and I was the only one in my group who knew that song.
After a break, he came out and played all the hits and everyone was happy again..phew... |

But when he came back to the Jazz Festival in 2011 he played a four hour set, which, according to the reports I read, was pretty killer. |

He played three concerts in a row at United Center in Chicago about three years ago. The reviews on prince.org were basically that the the first night wasn't very good - he didn't sing a lot and directed a lot of the singing to his female singers. I had planned on going to that first concert, but couldn't get the tickets I wanted, so I went the second night. The reviews on Prince.org for the second and third nights were primarily outstanding - including my own. It was an awesome concert. |
