OK I love PR and it's one of his best songs live in concert, but it isn't even in my Top 10 favorite P songs. It is just so overrated, especially by casual fans. The lyrics don't even really make sense and the best part about it is the end with the guitar solo and such. But he has so many better songs for sure.

There are some nasty repsonses here. Did all those people actually read and comprehend what FunkiestOne wrote? It's a great song, but there are better Prince songs. What's the problem?

Actually, the problem for me is that I don't see the point of the post. Purple Rain is Prince's signature song. It's iconic. It's more than the music. It's recognised by non-fans. It's regarded by some people as being his best song. Perhaps those things make it "overrated". But, so what?

It did what it had to do. Prince wanted to write a rock ballad to win over the masses and he did. I'm not sure if it's overrated, but it's surely overplayed, overhyped, overexposed, overeverything'd to the point where I just don't want to hear it anymore because I've heared it too often. But when you do sit down and actually listen to it again, then you realize that yes, it is really good. [Edited 5/20/16 0:45am]

Right, that is the thing. It's not that the song is overrated or something is wrong with it. It is still a majestic piece of art. Still as alive and electric as 1983. It's just that if someone hears any song too much they get tired of it. If you play your favorate songs all the time, you will get tired of it.

I've never heard it too much (radio or performances) so I don't have that jaded outlook on it that some do. Purple Rain + Sometimes It Snows In April, the 1st performances of these songs 8.1983 Dance Benefit Show & 6.7.1985 Masquerade Ball are the first songs I played that horrible day in April (followed by Power Fantastic)

I have nothing against the song, me personally, I never listen to any of the songs from the album PR, haven't in years and years. I always looked forward to WHAT's NEXT. SOTT will always be my favorite album.

What does pain me, is all of these singers doing covers of his songs now, something they would have never gotten by with only a couple of months ago, and making them sound like shit.

No one could sing those songs like he did.

It also pains me for all the media to call him the 'Purple Rain' star, as if that was all he ever did.

I mentioned I was still in mourning to a friend this past weekend, and they said, "Yeah, I loved Purple Rain."

I just shake my head an move on.

Purple Rain was important for him, of course. But it was also a curse to him in a way. Could you imagine having to sing that damn song over and over for the rest of your life just because it is what is remembered the most? To me, that would suck.

there are better songs, but it's something about PR that grabs you from the begining, it is the guitar....it pulls you in, to listen......then you find yourself just singing along..........forever

But, all I want is for him to be here to sing the damn song!

I don’t think Purple Rain is overrated at all. That song is what Prince is known for amongst his casual fans. I’m sure many of his hard core fans can name many songs that are arguably “better”. But being that this is a fan site and given the fact that Prince JUST DIED what would be anyone’s motivation for being critical of any of his music right now? The man was a genius. End of story.

speakeasy

Losing My Religion, Stairway to Heaven, What's Going On, etc.

None of these are over-rated IMO. They just happen to be the most popular (well known) songs by these artists.

Super fans may have their deep-cut favorites, but there's a reason why songs like these burrow themselves deep into the public psyche. They touch something deep within us--and maybe their accesibility is part of their power.

Purple Rain is as beautiful, powerful and spiritual a song as I know. In the aftermath of his passing, I heard it EVERYWHERE. And then it was playing in my head for DAYS and DAYS, nonstop. And I remember thinking--no matter how many times I hear this--it always feels potent and never played out.

Spiritual music.

It's a great song, but there are ones I prefer (probably not many, though). Regarding the generally awful tribute covers we've seen lately, the best Purple Rain cover for me remains the one performed by The Waterboys a while ago.

The Waterboys' Mike Scott has always been a huge Prince fan. Always spoke about him ininterviews, played his songs live. That led me to believe that when I saw the name Mike Scott credited for guitar on various Prince albums, I actually thought it was The Waterboys' Mike Scott.

What made the song Purple Rain extra special was the live performance by Prince.
His guitar playing, singing and connection with his fans while playing the song.

He had a spiritual connection to the song and in his concerts he was able to transmiss this feeling to his audience. I remember at the end of the song in Arras (France in 2010) he pointed to the sky and wanted the audience to thank God instead of him.

Yup, I've seen them playing it at gigs I've attended.

Perhaps you meant to say that as far as Prince songs go, it's overplayed. You're probably sick of hearing it especially given what a vast catalog P has. I was surprised to see recently when I was on Tidal and checking out the top 10 most popular Prince that PR didn't even make the list. I thought it'd be in the top 5 for sure and given his recent passing, I was surprised not to see it.

I certainly don't think it's overrated. It's a brilliant song.

Yes that was my point. I have never been at a Prince concert and wanted to yell out "Play Purple Rain". I don't yell out song suggestions anyway, but at many of his shows, people start yellin for Purple rain when there are better choices. But I get that the casual fans there mainly want to hear the hits. I'm the same way if I go to a show by many artists and I'm sure that their hits are probably somewhat overrated too.

Schrodingers Purple rain.

It is hIs most overrated song because that song isnt even the best one on the album. Yet it made purple his magical unicorn color and caused rock immortalization.

It is his most underrated song because it did not evrn make number 1 with the likes of Cream (pr is better than cream yet places lower) pr was blocked by a one or 2 hit wonder. Rediculous.

It is simultaneosly both underrated and overrated!

in your head, and in your reality, the song is exactly what you said it is. maybe you should try another experience. "if you would like to try another experience, press: Leave!"
