I always thought many of his songs could be country ballads, even Purple Rain. But Nothing Compares 2 U is imo a country ballad.

"Right The Wrong" is definitely country rock.

"With You" is country, and Jill's version lends to that even more.

"Purple Rain" could be a country song, but I don't want anyone else trying it. Leann Rhymes did already.

I would also vote for "Still Waiting".

Also "Gotta Broken Heart Again". Gheezus in lyric alone, that's a cry-in-your-beer country tune circa 1979.

Aerogram has a good idea with "Rocknroll Loveaffair", in that the newer Phase two version lends a country swing vibe.

For intensive purposes, "Take Me With U" is a country pop song.

.

Other songs to be considered, for me, are "Raspeberry Beret", and "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man".

.

If you look at his rockabilly stuff (discussed here recently), those could be added to a broader list.

gee, i didn't even think of most of those, nice list!

Wasn't "KISS" originally a country song before it was re-worked?

IMO, I don't think a blues/rock'n'roll chord structure makes it a country song.
The original "Kiss" take is more of a blues.

The chorus of "Right The Wrong" comes close.
"Still Waiting" is a good catch.

"Purple Rain", yes and no. A little because of the chords, even though but SKipper goes more gospel than country. The subject ("our love story is over"), the ballad feel, if sped up or played in 6/8, could qualify as.

After that, there are the melodies, which some can bear some influences.
But "define 'Country' ", I would say.

ya, it's more gospel than country, the testifying and arm waving is pure church. I still think his gospel just get's overlooked. we could make an even more expansive thread if we asked the same question about gospel.

Greensky Bluegrass does a great cover of When Doves Cry...

So did Prince ever record a country song?!... haha, I can't even imagine.

The guy recorded across so many genres I'm just curious…

…maybe lurking deep within the vault is a hidden album of Hank Williams covers!

I hope not. Some lines aren't meant to be crossed.

There's some country-sounding song Prince sings a clip of on one of the Ahdio shows... It's a parody. Funny tune. Unmistakably Country, probably more than any other he's done. He's singing in a southern drawl. I assume it's a song he wrote, though I don't have that confirmed.

.

"Indifference" (technically speaking it may be attributed to 3rdEYEGIRL, but probably still penned by Prince) is kind of Country or maybe a hybrid of Country and some other genre.

The Dixie Chicks did a tribute version of NC2U with his symbol lit up in purple as the backdrop.

.

Chris Stapleton did an accoustic version of NC2U as well as tribute. I actually never heard of Stapleton until I saw his Prince tribute, but he looks and sounds Country. He actually caught one of the high notes.

.

I don't know what the verdict was on the 99 items found in the drilled-open vault, but IIRC one of the albums in there was an alt-country album of material.

Yeeeahhhh! I didn't get the lyrics reference where you mentioned it earlier. Thank U. This totally made me laugh and put a smile on my face. Which Ahdio show you think this might be on? I may just go and hunt it down for the fun of it. smile

I dont think Prince was much of a fan of the genre when all is said and done.

The Ride sounds country to me. Although it is more of a bluesy type track.

Ok, I listened to it again and it's more blues than country, so never mind whistling whistling whistling

P said that he wrote and recorded a bunch of songs with Bonnie Raitt. He said those sessions were "kickin". I'm sure that they're locked up in his vault.
