I finally got into Phase 2, but that's cause I waited for the CD release. I'm was wondering if Prince had Phases 3&4 in the pipeline. There's more Prince cover icon cartoon images to choose from. Not that I'm saying this is evidence, just it would be nice for the next couple of albums to continue along the same theme. Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...

Yeah man. Me too. I didn't think it would happen (as I was hating it something fierce with bile pouring out of my ears) but I now like it for being so "out there" for him. I would have loved to hear him produced by all kinds of people just to find out what came out. Does that mean I want his vault material to be subjected to what Michael's has been? It depends on who's fiddlin' the levers. No Kanye thank you. [Edited 5/18/16 13:38pm]

I got to admit 'Groovy Potential' is the dark horse jam on HitNRun Phase 2

Still can't get into the majority of Phase 1, I'll give it another try one of these days but I'm in no hurry to do so, but Phase 2 really does have some amazing songs, Black Muse in particular has quickly become one of my favourite Prince songs, it's such a beautiful composition and sentiment (possibly his best lyrics for a while actually), was welling up just now listening to the audience recording of the last Atlanta show where he plays it Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

It's just such an obvious album opener to me. If it opened HNRP1 you'd press play and BOOM!!! I love Prince albums that start like that.

My spouse is partial to Phase 1 and I like Phase 2 better.
So we end up playing about half of both phases, with a bit of a prelude, as follows:
Free Urself Shut This Down (Vocals are just a bit too harsh sounding but it's still a good groove). Like a Mack (though it feels too long) This Could be Us (I'm surprised how much this has grown on me). Fallinginlovetonite (He loves this but it's like a toy Prince song to me. a nice looking toy, but still a toy of a song). HardRockLover (this one's a true Prince classic, it's simply incredible how he can build so much tension and awe from very little lyrical content). Mister Nelson 1000 oxs June Baltimore Rock and Roll Love Affair Look at me, Look at u (sometimes I skip ahead and say that's Dear Mr. Man) Black Muse Stare Screwdriver Revelation
I don't play Xtralovable because he doesn't like it. For me, it's one of the best on both phases, I understand why he liked it so much as it's a masterful brassy study in syncopation.

I'm still not in love with much of Plectrum, but I've always loved AOA and Phase Two. 20ten also. And not that I'm digging Phase One, I'm even sadder about Prince's passing. This decade was building to something awesome. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

AOA is steady creepin' up on my Prince album rankings. Might even clock in at #15 now. Phase 1 was dead last but has definitely jumped into Top 25....because I just know everyone was wondering about my list....

Those albums are more likely to appeal to younger/newer "fans" who did not come up with Prince from the 70s - in my opinion. Save America - Stop Illegal Immigration. God bless America. PEACE

Surprise, surprise.

I still think there's some production shit going on with Phase One. But I just enjoy it now without letting myself be so uptight about it. I don't know if that makes sense. I loved phase 2 from the beginning and really didn't like the first half of Phase 1. Now it's something to revisit - automatically special since it's part of the last set of songs he released. This is just the magic of Prince at work. At least half of his albums I didn't care for first couple of listens (including albums such as ATWIAD, Parade, Lovesexy, Come, Chaos, 20ten, etc.) But repeated listening always rewards you. I really dig both phase one and two, and I kinda hope there was at least a phase three in the pipeline that we still may get one day....

AOA, Phase 1, & 2 have been on rotate for the past couple weeks. Just can't get enough of them.

Between the two, in terms of style, the set is fairly comprehensive. Tag on a third phase and it could have ended up being very comprehensive. [Edited 5/18/16 20:20pm]

It's a huge difference if someone is producing around your vocals, instead of you laying vocals on a more or less finished instrumental production. The latter is the only way to actually trigger some creativity from the artist as well. If Kanye created some of his more avant garde beats for Prince, I'm sure Prince could lay some sick vocals on top of it. But Kanye could just as much kill the whole feel of pre recorded vocals, by editing it to death. People really underrestimates Kanye beause of his persona though. Because Kanye wants more credit than he deserves, people are reacting in the opposite direction by giving him less credit than he deserves. If he could just shut up, then he'd be alot more respected.
