I was the joint webmaster of the most popular Madonna fansite in the early 2000s. Madonna was aware of us - more than aware actually.

Unlike Prince though, I doubt she interacted at any level. I think Madonna tolerated us, rather than loved us. lol

Her people began to send more and more demands though. I don't mean minions either; people like Caresse Henry would email and phone.

The demands were so odd... Like she'd ask us not to post pictures of Lourdes (citing privacy concerns) but then she'd drag her daughter to a Harry Potter red carpet premiere in London ensuring she'd be on every front page the day after.

She didn't have an official website when our fansite took off, and when she finally did (MadonnaMusic.com) it had links to our fansite. There wasn't really much content on the official site until she acquired Madonna.com much later.

I also helped-out with a fansite for the Manchester band, Doves.

They were really appreciative. We never had any hassle from them when we'd upload full TV or radio performances for fans to download and keep. The band were very ambivalent towards bootlegs.

The Doves fansite was later absorbed into their actual site, but I'd bailed-out before then anyway.

Wendy & Lisa were huge Doves fans.

Anyway. I guess it's true: Build it and they will come.
