Prince disliked D&P & O(+> ?

When P. changed his name, he said part of it was because he felt like he had become a product, a trademark for WB to make money from, and that reflected in his work.

Do you agree?

He seems to have been so self destructive through those years, he could have gotten through it with a higher profile out the side if he had handled things a bit more tactfully.

All throughout Prince's discography, even to this day, every mainstream album release contains songs that are designed to be hits. Therefore, I disagree that Prince was being turned into a product by Warners or that he actually disliked either Diamonds & Pearls or prince.

Prince said alot of things to justify his pursuit of 'freedom' from Warners. I don't doubt that he may have convinced himself of the many things he said at the time though.

Problem is for most of you youngsters is that you dont know why Prince did what he did.You have no real sense of the Revolutionary spirit.
When Prince changed his name it was a revolutionary act of defiance similar to Ali changing his name or Rosa Parks saying that she was not moving.

"Contract Killer" you say?

Warners started killing Prince in 1990 when they released GraffitiBridge under its R&B heading and banished Prince to its R&B division. In case you dont know that spells doom because of lack of marketing.

D & P was a suprising album just because it exceeded expectations and became a huge hit with the song Gett Off,which Prince had to sneak to clubs in a plain wrapper to get played.

Prince is a musician who can play the game well unless the forces of the industry are targeting you.In 1994/1995 GOLD was out there waiting to be played.Warners had lost a major opportunity to have a hit with several MAJOR hits because they did not want to give the master tapes to Prince.

Both lost and both are still losing today. Prince is not innocent in this little deal but Warner Bros. Records is certainly at fault.

He still plays some songs here and there.

The moaning is about how he did the "Package" with those albums: CD, Arsenio, Tour, Mtv special, press press press. Then he came back with the untimely prince album and poof...where were the sales?

Only one single grabbed much support (7), and the rest was rather unpalatable for the public.

Truth is, many people bought the Diamonds and Pearls album...and were less than impressed. Yeah, showing ass was cool, Gett Off, Cream, and Thunder were cool, but Diamonds and Pearls was a bit lackluster and Money Don't Matter 2night underwhelmed. The rest of the album made people think twice about the next one, and then they see Prince, with a chain hat saying "MY NAME IS PRINCE!!!"

Um...okay...he's weird. And suddenly, the sales don't come back as hard as they used to.

He came off Graffiti Bridge with a loss and got a nice contract with Diamonds and Pearls. prince doesn't do so good and now Warner's needs some cash so they start to recoup. What a shitty time to be Prince.

Undertaker in underground, Gold Experience is underground, Come is underground, Black Album is released and nobody cares. TMBGITW hits the airwaves and suddenly Prince has a hit! And it was from outside of the system. Hrmmm...I wonder wy Prince disliked the system. wink

blah blah blah...I shouldn't drink and post wink

Great point !!! Most people have no idea that RnB acts do not get the promotion that pop acts do. Once Warner Brothers put Prince in the RnB division he was doomed. He did a smart thing in getting out of the contract. However, he did not go about it the right way.

Realize that this guy had been with the same label since he 19 years old and does not know how to do anything else for a living but play music. I imagine that the whole experience may have caused him to have a little neaouvs breakdown

Actually Prince wouldn't hand over the master tapes of Gold to WB.
