I'm more of a Prince fan than MJ due to his musical output and proteges, but I don't like it when they bash to praise the other. Same when they compare Marilyn Monroe to Jayne Mansfield, or Marlon Brando to James Dean. I may prefer Monroe and Brando, but I still appreciate Mansfield and Dean

Exactly. They didn't hate each other. Why would they? Where did the malice come from? People don't hate each other just because. There's always a reason. Prince and MJ had a healthy rivalry, and frankly it kept them on top of their game. Iron sharpens iron.

Lionel Richie recently said that he felt like there was a class of people, a group, that all belonged to each other. Him, MJ, Prince, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen - it was like a big band. They all were roughly the same age, flourished at the same periods, etc etc. Similar careers. So when one of the people in the class departs, it's tough. Someone in your group is no longer there. That is why MJ is brought up. Plus, he's also one of the biggest black artists of the 80s and 90s, like Prince. He had an addiction to pain killers, like Prince. Because of his fame, he lived a very secluded life most times, like Prince. Hell, one was raised JW, and the other became one!

Well, I don't know about Phil, but Bruce is ten years older than Prince and MJ.

Again, they were in the same class/group of musicians. It's not about age. I mean, I went to school with people 4 years younger than me, but we all shared the same experiences at the same time. That's the point.

Apparently a lot of Prince fans are also Michael Jackson fans. I remember when MJ died, there were ongoing threads on Prince.org that got so large the moderators had to lock older ones and start new ones. This went on for well over a year after MJ passed. I actually came to Prince.org to get the latest MJ news during that time. That speaks volumes for the love that Prince fans have for Michael Jackson as well. The bottom line is that Prince and MJ had a different vibe, but they both were the greatest talents in modern times.

MTV started playing both videos at the same time. They are both credited with breaking down racial barriers on the network. I've also read that 1999 (the song) greatly influenced thriller - MJ's team wanted him to explore a new edgy sound and move away from straight r&b. . To me there will never be a comparison. Not even close. If MJ was Elvis, Prince was Elvis and Mozart.
